Weather cuts doubleheader short as Lehigh falls 2-0 in single game at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Lehigh baseball team's scheduled Patriot League-opening doubleheader at Army was cut short as the teams were only able to get through one game due to rain. The two-time defending champion Black Knights claimed a 2-0 victory in the day's single game. Saturday's second game will hopefully be played Sunday, depending on weather. Sunday's doubleheader has been moved to 12 p.m. Monday.

Army got on the board right away in the seven-inning contest, following a leadoff double from Jon Crucitti and RBI single off the bat of Mark McCants as the Black Knights took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Mountain Hawks threatened in the top of the second with runners on the corners and one out, but couldn't capitalize and continued to trail 1-0.

Lehigh senior starting pitcher Mike Burke retired 11 straight batters until Army's Jacob Page blooped a single into right field to lead off the fifth inning and later scored the Black Knights' second run on a fielder's choice of the bat of Daniel Cortes. The Mountain Hawks had their chances with base runners in every inning, but Army's starting pitcher Nick Dignacco got out of every jam to preserve his shutout and help Army to the 2-0 win.

Burke suffered the loss despite allowing just three hits through his six innings of work. Dignacco finished with a line of five hits and no runs in a complete-game seven- inning effort. Five different Mountain Hawks recorded Lehigh's five hits.
