BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a dominant 9-3 win at Bucknell on Saturday, the #14/15 Lehigh men's lacrosse team quickly returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to #17 Yale to face the Bulldogs. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Reese Stadium. It's a clash of the two-time defending Patriot League Champions against the two-time defending Ivy League Champs.
Â
The Mountain Hawks are searching for a big nonleague victory against a top-10 quality opponent. Yale has enjoyed a similar surge to national prominence as Lehigh. The Bulldogs beat Penn State in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament and return several key players from that squad.
Â
After Bucknell took a 1-0 lead on Saturday, the Mountain Hawks responded in a big way. Junior Dan Taylor got the scoring started at 10:49 of the second quarter, beginning a streak of nine straight Lehigh goals. Taylor scored four of the Mountain Hawks' first five goals including a natural hat trick (three straight) bridging the second and third quarters. The four goals tied a career high. Sophomore Reid Weber posted a goal and two assists for his fourth straight multi-point game; he currently owns a team-leading 16 points on the season (nine goals, seven assists). Sophomore Alex Eaton scored a career-high two goals while junior Patrick Corbett added two goals, already his fifth multi-goal game this season. Sophomore Billy Oppenheimer also dished a career-high three assists.
Â
The defense was the story of Saturday's game, as it held Bucknell scoreless for 50:28 from the beginning of the first to end of the fourth quarter. In that span, the Mountain Hawks allowed just six shots on goal and junior Matt Poillon was there to stop all six. For the game, the Lehigh defense allowed just 20 shots (and 10 on goal). The defense has allowed seven or fewer goals in all five wins this season (just 5.6 per game). Sophomore Casey Eidenshink had a career-high three caused turnovers to go with a groundball while classmate Tripp Telesco posted two groundballs and two caused turnovers. He now has 19 groundballs and 14 caused turnovers on the season. Telesco trails just senior Ryan Buttenbaum in groundballs; Buttenbaum has 32 this season and won 11-of-15 faceoffs with seven groundballs in a dominant effort at the X.
Â
The game was a rematch of the 2013 Patriot League Championship Game. Bucknell was predicted second in the league's preseason poll, but it was the Mountain Hawks who won their fourth straight against the Bison and second straight in convincing fashion. Lehigh held a 9-1 fourth quarter lead until Bucknell tacked on two late tallies, including one with Poillon and several Lehigh regulars pulled. Meanwhile, Yale is coming off a tough overtime loss at Fairfield Saturday, falling down to #17 in the national polls.
Â
Yale is 2-1 on the season, beating St. John's and Bryant before falling to Fairfield. The two-time defending Ivy League Champions are projected to contend for a third straight league title in 2014. Conrad Oberbeck leads the tam in goals (8) and points (10). Brandon Mangan has nine points via four goals and five assists while Shane Thornton owns six points behind two goals and four assists. Dylan Levings is outstanding at the faceoff X, winning 60 percent of his draws last year. This year, he's won just over 50 percent (34-of-67) while scooping a team-leading 12 groundballs. Michael Quinn leads the team with seven caused turnover (to go with his 10 groundballs) while Jimmy Craft has caused five turnovers to go with seven groundballs. Eric Natale has played every minute in goal, owning an 8.54 GAA and 49.0 save percentage.
Â
Yale leads the all-time series, 7-3. The squads met in 2010, 2011 and 2012, but didn't play last season. Lehigh won the first two meetings in 1916 and 1918, but then went 94 years until its next victory in 2012 (by an 11-7 final). The Mountain Hawks lost their last meeting at Yale by a 10-6 final in 2011.
Â
Lehigh returns home to host Navy on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a big Patriot League matchup.
