#17/19 Lehigh hosts Marquette in home opener Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off a season-opening 13-6 win at Furman last Saturday, the Mountain Hawks host Marquette in their home opener on Saturday. Opening faceoff is set for 12 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The last time Lehigh played at home, the squad defeated Bucknell 11-5 for its second straight Patriot League Championship.

Senior Cody Ferraro, junior Patrick Corbett and sophomore Reid Weber each netted hat tricks last Saturday to lead the Mountain Hawk offense. Juniors Jack Bogorowski, Kurtis Kaunas and Dan Taylor along with sophomore Alex Eaton added the remaining goals. The Mountain Hawks had 42 shots in the game while allowing just 15. The 15 shots allowed marked Lehigh's fewest given up since Feb. 25, 2012 when the Mountain Hawks allowed just eight against Manhattan. Lehigh picked up a 13-0 shutout in that game.
 
Last Saturday marked Lehigh's fifth straight season-opening victory after beating Saint Joseph's in each of the previous four openers. Sophomore Tripp Telesco scooped three groundballs and caused a turnover to help lead the defense, senior Lukas Mikelinich had two groundballs and senior Ty Souders scooped one. Souders now has 96 career groundballs and is quickly approaching the 100 GB plateau. Lehigh edged the Paladins in groundballs 31-19. Senior goalie Matt Poillon made six saves while senior Ryan Buttenbaum won 14-of-23 faceoffs.
 
The game is Marquette's first of the season following its inaugural season in 2013. The Golden Eagles enjoyed some bright spots, going 5-8 including a win over NCAA Tournament qualifier Detroit along with wins over Air Force, Mercer, High Point and Bellarmine.
 
Last Saturday marked the earliest game in school history. It was one of two games played last week, along with Delaware vs. High Point.
 
Lehigh has won four straight home games dating back to last season, along with two of its last three home openers. Saturday marks the first of two straight games against Big East foes as the Mountain Hawks welcome Villanova next Saturday. Overall, Lehigh faces three Big East teams this season, also playing Georgetown on Apr. 12 as part of the Relentless Cup.
 
The Mountain Hawks are looking to win their home opener for the third time in the last four seasons. Lehigh is also looking to win its seventh straight regular season game and fifth straight home game dating back to last season.
 
Marquette enjoyed a solid first season as a program, finishing 5-8 with a win over MAAC Champion and NCAA Tournament qualifier Detroit while also beating Air Force, Mercer, High Point and Bellarmine. The Golden Eagles were led offensively by Tyler Melnyk who posted 38 points (23 goals, 15 assists). Conor Gately had 36 (16 goals, 20 assists) while Kyle Whitlow finished with 23 (18 goals, five assists). Liam Byrnes posted a team-leading 60 groundballs while Cullen Cassidy won 80-of-195 faceoffs. J.J. Sagl saw the majority of time in goal, posting a 12.71 GAA and 44.7 save percentage.
 
Lehigh and Marquette have never played. Saturday marks the first all-time meeting.
 
Following Saturday's game, the Mountain Hawks remain home to host another Big East foe (Villanova) next Saturday at 3 p.m. Lehigh hits the road the following Saturday for its Patriot League opener at Boston University.
