BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Five wrestlers with ties to Lehigh and the Lehigh Valley Athletic Club competed at the Dave Schultz Memorial International tournament Friday January 31 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The contingent included two former Lehigh All-Americans, a Lehigh assistant coach and two athletes who train with and compete for the LVAC.
Leading the way for the LVAC contingent was three-time All-American Robert Hamlin '13, who won his first three bouts to reach the 86 kg finals before falling 11-0 to former Iowa State NCAA Champion Jon Reader. Hamlin won by fall over India's Pawan Kumar and then won decisions over Enock Francois and former Appalachian State All-American Austin Trotman.
Lehigh volunteer assistant coach Drew Headlee competed at 65 kg, winning his first two bouts before losing to eventual finalist Franklin Gomez of Puerto Rico, a former All-American at Michigan State. Headlee lost his first consolation bout and finished 2-2 for the tournament.
Former Drexel standout Steve Mytych had a strong tournament competing for the LVAC as he finished fourth at 57 kg. Mytych won his first two matches before falling to eventual champion Omak Syuryun in the quarterfinals. He then won three straight consolation bouts to advance to the third place match.
At 97 kg David Zabriskie was in the field but was a late scratch due to injury. Three-time All-American and 2011 NCAA Champion Zach Rey '12 competed at 125 kg, winning his first round match 11-0 over India's Rohit Patel, before defaulting out of the tournament.
