BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Riding four straight victories and a thrilling comeback at Boston University Saturday, the Lehigh men's basketball team stays on the road when it faces Army on Wednesday evening. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks have moved all the way to fifth in the league standings and are only two games behind the Black Knights who are in third. Ten of Lehigh's last 11 games (dating back to Dec. 30 at Bryant) have come down to the wire.
Â
Senior Mackey McKnight was the hero again on Saturday, breaking an 80-80 tie with a driving layup with just 0.5 seconds remaining to hand the Terriers their first-ever home Patriot League loss. McKnight scored seven of Lehigh's nine overtime points as the Mountain Hawks erased a 15-point halftime deficit for their fourth straight win (all when trailing at the half). The New Orleans native began the hot streak with a driving layup with 1.1 seconds left in overtime to give Lehigh a dramatic win at Navy.
Â
Freshman Tim Kempton led the way with 18 points on Saturday. He shot 8-of-13 from the field while adding five rebounds and a block, earning Patriot League Rookie of the Week for a second straight week and fourth time this season. McKnight finished with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting while adding seven assists. Sophomores Jesse Chuku and Justin Goldsborough posted 11 points apiece. Chuku hit two clutch free throws with 15 seconds left in regulation, evening the score at 73 and forcing overtime.
Â
The Mountain Hawks trailed for the first 34:48 until junior Stefan Cvrkalj hit a three-pointer to give Lehigh a 66-63 advantage. Lehigh avenged a heartbreaking, last-second one-point loss to Boston U in January. The Terriers were predicted to win the Patriot League and feature preseason Player of the Year D.J. Irving. Saturday's win marked Lehigh's first-ever victory against Boston University.
Â
Lehigh and Army played a tight three-point game in January, which the Black Knights won 79-76.
Â
Army is 11-10 in the league and 7-3 in the Patriot League, standing third in the league standings. The Black Knights' only league losses have come to Holy Cross, American and Boston University. The Black Knights are actually 6-4 on the road, but only 4-5 at home. Kyle Wilson leads the team and is second in the league in scoring (19.7). Tanner Plomb averages 10.3 points and 4.5 rebounds while Dylan Cox has 9.0 points and 4.1 rebounds and Kevin Ferguson averages 8.3 points and a team-leading 5.4 boards. The Black Knights lead the Patriot League in scoring average (74.6), but are second-to-last in scoring defense (74.2). Army uses an aggressive style to force an average of 14.0 turnovers per game.
Â
Army's win in January snapped a five-game Lehigh winning streak. That gave the Black Knights a 61-37 all-time advantage. Army's only other win in the last 10 meetings came on Jan. 15, 2011 by a 75-72 final. Lehigh won the first-ever meeting between the two sides back in 1906-07 (a 26-24 final).
Â
The Mountain Hawks return home to host Loyola on Saturday. Opening tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in Stabler Arena. Tickets are available online, including a print-at-home option, or by calling the ticket office at 610-7LU-GAME (610-758-4263).
