Â
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's and women's track and field teams prepare to kick off the season Friday and Saturday when the Mountain Hawks host the Fast Times Before Finals meet at Rauch Fieldhouse.
Â
"Even though we have many returners, this year's teams are brand new, we've got a whole new dynamic," said head coach Matt Utesch. "There's a whole new expectation, and the Fast Times meet will give us a little preview to what this team is going to look like."
Â
Last year's women's team finished in second place at both indoor and outdoor Patriot League Championships, which was the program's best finish at both events, while the men finished last year's indoor and outdoor championships in fifth place.
Â
Lehigh returns many student-athletes who made quite an impact last season. On the women's side, returning Mountain Hawks include sophomore Courtney Avery who was the indoor Patriot League Champion in the high jump and the Rookie of the Meet, and junior Elizabeth Weiler who recently became an All-American at the NCAA Cross Country Championship.
Â
In addition to Weiler and Avery, senior Serenah Polite brings success back to the program, finishing in third place in the triple jump at the indoor and outdoor championships.
Â
"I know I am going to have a difficult time deciding which women to take to the Patriot League Championships because we're so deep," said Utesch. "Replacing Brooke Astor is impossible, however we have some really good female student-athletes in the long jump who will step up and in the hurdles such as Polite and sophomore Katie Hatler. We also have Avery who is coming back as the Rookie of the Year and Patriot League record holder in the high jump."
Â
On the men's side, Lehigh returns the Patriot League Champion in both indoor and outdoor high jump events, senior Adeolu Adesida, as well as senior Ryan Mahalsky who recently recorded Lehigh men's cross country's best finish ever at the NCAA Championship.
Â
In addition to Mahalsky and Adesida, senior Derek Gaul will return with a second place long jump in the indoor championship. Sophomore Daniel Boardman returns after a standout freshman season, placing fifth in the long jump at the indoor championshps, and third at the outdoor championshps. Senior Christopher Watson also returns after finishing in fifth in the 800 meter at the indoor championship and third in the outdoor. Senior Julian Copeland will look to continue on his success this season, finishing in second place in the long jump at last season's outdoor championships.
Â
"Coming off of cross country, we're excited to see what the distance kids will bring," said Utesch. "Ryan Mahalsky had a great season with us last year and just came off of a phenomenal cross country season, so we're looking for big things from him. In our long jump squad, Copeland will be someone we look to, and senior Justin Mahoney will be the backbone of our sprint group. Senior Benjamin Beauchamp, who scored in the Patriot League Championships last year in the discus, shows a lot of senior leadership for us. Our guys are coming back with a mission, so it's pretty exciting."
Â
A few returning Mountain Hawks also competed past the Patriot League Championships last year at ECAC's/IC4A's and the NCAA East Regional.
Â
At the indoor ECAC's/IC4A's, Mahalsky finished in fifth place in the 5,000 meters while Adesida finished in seventh place in the high jump. Avery finished fourth in the high jump while Weiler finished in 21st in the 5,000. At the outdoor ECAC's/IC4A's, Mahalsky finished in 17th in the 5,000 meters, while Avery finished in seventh in the high jump and Weiler finished in second in the 10K. Avery finished out her freshman season competing in the NCAA East Regional, accompanied by Mahalsky, who finished in 35th place in the 10K, and Adesida who finished in 28th in the high jump.
Â
The Mountain Hawks indoor season is highlighted by big meets such as the annual Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet at home on January 24, the Armory Invitational in New York on January 30, the Giegengack Invitational at Yale on February 6, and the Patriot League Championships held at Navy this year on February 20-22.
Â
The outdoor season will begin on March 21 at the Philly Classic held at Penn, highlighted by marque events such as the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh N.C. on March 27, the annual Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet at Lafayette on April 4, the prestigious Penn Relays on April 23, the Lehigh Games held at home on April 25, and the Patriot League Championships on May 1-2 at Army.
Â
For now, the Mountain Hawks have Friday to look forward to, where action will begin at 5 p.m. at the Rauch Field House on the Goodman Campus. Multi events will be held on Friday with all other events beginning on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Â
Results can be viewed throughout Friday and Saturday here and will also be posted on Lehighsports.com at the conclusion of the meet on Saturday.
