BETHLEHEM, Pa. – On a weekend in which Lehigh University is taking over New York City for the 150th meeting of college football's most-played rivalry, the Mountain Hawks' wrestling team will compete in the Big Apple as Lehigh faces Columbia at the historic New York Athletic Club Friday evening. The Mountain Hawks are 2-1 on the dual season and are up to No. 11 in the polls after knocking off then-No. 11 Pittsburgh 19-12, Saturday at Fitzgerald Field House. Lehigh won six bouts against the Panthers, with freshman Dylan Milonas earning a bonus point with his win at 157 to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Â
Lehigh will wrestle a dual meet at the historic New York Athletic Club for the fourth time in school history. The last time Lehigh wrestled at the NYAC the Mountain Hawks fell to Hofstra 30-6 on January 28, 2007. Two years prior, Lehigh edged Missouri 22-17 in a battle of top-15 teams on January 11, 2005. Lehigh's first appearance at the NYAC was a 29-6 rout of Hofstra on January 9, 2002.
Â
The Mountain Hawks' lineup features a pair of true freshmen who have done well through the first two weeks of the dual season. Scott Parker (125) and Dylan Milonas (157) are a combined 5-1 on the season, with Milonas improving to 3-0 on the young season with a major decision victory at Pittsburgh. Parker owns the only loss among the pair, which came by a mere point against Jordan Conaway of Penn State. Last year Darian Cruz competed at 125 as a true freshman and finished seventh at the NCAA Championships, becoming Lehigh's first true freshman All-American since 1980.
Â
Columbia opens its dual season against Lehigh Friday night. The Lions were 8-6 in duals last season and finished fifth at the EIWA Championships. Columbia sent a contingent of wrestlers to the Michigan State Open on November 2. Markus Scheidel and Zack Hernandez led the way for the Lions with third place finishes at 157 and 184, respectively. Connor Sutton finished fifth at 149 while Shane Hughes and Garrett Ryan finished sixth at 174 and heavyweight, respectively. Scheidel is the only Columbia wrestler ranked by the Open Mat as he comes in at No. 16 at 157. Columbia will wrestle at the NYAC for the first time since topping Princeton 30-7 in 2013.
Â
Lehigh holds a convincing lead in the all-time series against Columbia. The Mountain Hawks have won 11 straight duals against the Lions, dating back to the 1920s. Pat Santoro is 1-0 against Columbia as Lehigh's head coach. Columbia is the nation's oldest college wrestling program. Prior to last season's meeting at the Northeast Duals these teams had not squared off since 2007, and before that 1997.
Â
Saturday's match gets underway at 7 p.m. from the New York Athletic Club. Lehigh fans can reserve tickets in advance by calling John Rollins at the NYAC at 212-767-7093. Tickets will then be held for pick-up and payment ($10 cash) in the NYAC lobby on match night. Please note the NYAC has a Dress Code in place: Sports jacket required for men. No jeans, sneakers t-shirt or sandals.
Â
Due to restrictions at the NYAC there is no broadcast coverage planned by either institution. Match-by-match updates will be available via Twitter by following @LehighWrestling.
