BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks will look to close their home schedule with their first home victory as Lehigh hosts Colgate Saturday on Military Day at Goodman Stadium. Lehigh will be looking to bounce back from a 27-20 loss at Holy Cross last weekend, while building momentum towards next week's 150th meeting of college football's most-played rivalry against Lafayette at Yankee Stadium. Last week the Mountain Hawks got a career-high 390 passing yards from Nick Shafnisky and Troy Pelletier caught ten passes for 214 yards and a touchdown, but a 17-0 Holy Cross run late in the second quarter forced Lehigh to play catch-up.
Â
Colgate looks to snap a four-game skid and pick up its first road victory of the season as the Raiders visit Goodman Stadium. The Raiders fell to 4-6 overall after a last-second 19-16 home loss to Lafayette last Saturday in a game Colgate led 16-0. The Raiders finished 4-1 at home, with league wins over Georgetown and Holy Cross, but are 0-4 away from Andy Kerr Stadium.
Â
Colgate boasts the Patriot League's top rushing attack averaging over 192 yards per game on the ground. Freshman Bret Mooney has started the last four games at quarterback, with early-season starter Jake Melville sidelined. The Raiders rank sixth in the league in pass defense, just ahead of Lehigh, but have been opportunistic with 12 interceptions. Mike Armiento leads the defense with three picks to go along with 73 tackles.
Â
After breaking out in Lehigh's Sept. 13 loss at New Hampshire, Pelletier enjoyed a monster game in his return to New England, hauling in ten catches for 214 yards and a touchdown at Holy Cross. The New Hampshire native matched the seventh-highest single game receiving yardage total in school history and delivered Lehigh's 12th 200-yard receiving game, as well as its first by a freshman. His superb day ended abruptly after suffering an injury on Lehigh's first play of the fourth quarter. Pelletier's big day followed a seven-catch, 187-yard effort at Georgetown. The two-time reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week leads Lehigh with 701 receiving yards and six touchdowns.
Â
With its running game having a rare rough day at Holy Cross the Mountain Hawks took to the air, throwing 38 times and completing 24 passes for 390 yards; the most since Lehigh threw for 430 at Princeton last season. The trio Josh Parris, Troy Pelletier and Sasha Kelsey combined for 20 of the 24 receptions for 368 yards.
Â
Difficulties on third downs have played a significant role in Lehigh's struggles this season. In its first four games Lehigh's offense converted a respectable 46 percent of its third downs but since then the Mountain Hawks have converted at just 26 percent, including a combined 12-for-50 in three league games. Defensively the Mountain Hawks have had trouble getting off the field all season long. Lehigh is allowing opponents to convert at a rate of 48 percent, but the Mountain Hawks have limited their last two opponents to just 31 percent (9-for-29).
Â
Lehigh meets Colgate for the 53rd time on Saturday with the Raiders holding a 28-22 lead. There have also been two ties. Lehigh has won three of the last four meetings, but Colgate's win in 2012 gave the Raiders the Patriot League title. Andy Coen is 4-4 versus Colgate and 2-2 versus the Raiders at Goodman Stadium.
Â
Saturday's game kicks off just after 12:30 p.m. on Military Day at Goodman Stadium. Tickets for the game are still available, and may be purchased in one of three ways: by visiting the Lehigh ticket office located in Stabler Arena, by calling (610) 7LU-GAME, or on-line anytime at LehighTickets.com.
