BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off a heartbreaking loss to Boston University Sunday, the Lehigh men's basketball team remains home to host Army on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks played a trio of down to the wire games last week, all being decided in the final seconds (or overtime). Senior Mackey McKnight was clutch down the stretch, coming off a 23-point effort against Boston University Sunday, including a personal 8-0 run to give Lehigh a one-point lead with eight seconds remaining.
Â
Prior to the game, 50 individuals from the Lehigh Valley who have made the decision to join the United States Army will be recognized at mid-court, taking their oath of enlistment. The oath will be administered by captain Ryan Glielmi.
Â
Lehigh took an early second-half lead, but Boston University responded to take as much as a nine-point lead. The Mountain Hawks wouldn't go away against the preseason Patriot League favorites, eventually taking a lead with less than 10 seconds to go. However, the Terriers went the other way and preseason Patriot League Player of the Year D.J. Irving was fouled and knocked down both free throws to give BU the 67-66 victory.
Â
McKnight eclipsed 20 points for the third time this season and 10th time in his career. He knocked down three early three-pointers, then ended with Lehigh's final eight points, hitting 9-of-17 from the field and 4-of-7 from three-point range. McKnight has moved all the way to 22nd in school history with 1,117 career points. He added five rebounds and five assists, playing 38 minutes. Sophomore Jesse Chuku and junior Corey Schaefer each added 11 points, shooting 5-of-10 and 5-of-7 from the field, respectively. It marked Chuku's fifth straight game with double-figure points. Freshman Miles Simelton scored six points, all in the first half, to tie a career high, shooting 3-of-5 while tying a career high three assists.
Â
The loss snapped an eight-game home winning streak and giving the Mountain Hawks their first home loss of the season. The Terriers are one of two new teams in the Patriot League (along with Loyola).
Â
The Mountain Hawks have shown great balance all season. Three average double-figure points while Schaefer averages 9.9 and freshman Austin Price 9.7. Wednesday's opponent, Army features the Patriot League's second leading scorer Kyle Wilson (18.7 points per game), but he's the only player to average double figures. The Black Knights lead the league in scoring, however, due to tremendous balance. Three average between 8.4 and 9.4 points while six score between 6.0 and 9.4. Army was predicted third in the Patriot League preseason poll following a fourth-place finish a season ago.
Â
The Mountain Hawks have won five in a row against Army, but the Black Knights still lead the all-time series, 60-37. Lehigh has won four of its last five at home, including an 81-75 Senior Day victory last March. Army last beat the Mountain Hawks on Jan. 15, 2011 by a 75-72 final. Lehigh won the first-ever meeting between the two sides back in 1906-07 (a 26-24 final).
Â
Army struggled to a 4-7 nonleague record, but has begun Patriot League play with a 2-0 mark. The Black Knights are coming off wins at Lafayette and against Loyola. Wilson leads the team and is second in the league in scoring while three average between 8.4 and 9.4: Kevin Ferguson (9.4), Tanner Plomb (9.0) and Dylan Cox (8.4). Ferguson leads the team in rebounding (5.7 average) while Larry Toomey comes in at 4.8. Cox leads the team in assists with 39 in 13 games.
Â
The Mountain Hawks hit the road to face Patriot League newcomer Loyola on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Baltimore. Lehigh returns home next Wednesday (Jan. 15) to host American at 7 p.m.
