BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team battled back from a pair of deficits, but Penn scored on a penalty corner with no time remaining to hand the Mountain Hawks a heartbreaking 5-4 defeat on Friday. Senior Caitlyn Mitchell scored a pair of goals to lead a high-scoring attack while freshman Julia Ward made eight second-half saves between the pipes.
"I think it shows heart that we keep battling back," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. "We need to work on not just playing in spurts. There was a lot of scoring in today's game, which was excellent. We're seeing some good skills from a lot of players who haven't used the skills before."
Mitchell scored the first of her two goals at the 9:04 mark, blasting a shot past Quakers' goalie Carly Sokach to make it 1-0. Penn answered with the next three to open up a 3-1 advantage at 30:54, but the Mountain Hawks ended the first half in a big way. Freshman Marissa Glatt scored her first-career goal at 33:46 and Mitchell converted a penalty stroke just 1:02 later.
The Quakers controlled the beginning stages of the second half, peppering Ward with shots, but the freshman goalkeeper came up big. She finished with eight second-half saves while senior Marie Mignogna made a big defensive stop.
Penn's Jasmine Cole scored at the 42:57 mark after a flurry of shots, but Lehigh had an answer. The Mountain Hawks turned a turnover into a transition opportunity as sophomore Erin Ricker found freshman Gabby Tofig in front who made the tip past Sokach to even the score at 4-4 at 66:01.
Penn had three penalty corners in the final minute, including two with the clock at zero. The Quakers' Elizabeth Hitti converted their final chance to walk away winners.
The Quakers held the edge in shots (24-12) and penalty corners (13-3). Ward finished with eight saves for the Mountain Hawks across Sokach who made four.
"The pressure was good," said Blue. "Some of the freshmen are really starting to step up. We're young. We're looking to finish in the next game."
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Sunday when they head to Towson to face the Tigers. Gametime is set for 12 p.m.
