TOWSON, Md. - Freshman Marissa Glatt scored the only goal of the game and classmate Julia Ward made six saves in the cage as the Mountain Hawks downed Towson, 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. Glatt scored just 7:01 into the game while the defense stood tall the rest of the way.
"It was a back and forth game and I am very proud of the entire team for competing and working for the entire 70 minutes to get the win," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. "Julia played like a senior today."
Glatt gave Lehigh a lead it wouldn't relinquish early in the first half, taking a feed from sophomore Zoey Pacheco and beating Towson goalkeeper Brittany Varacallo from in close to make it 1-0. It marked Glatt's second goal in as many games.
The Mountain Hawks held an 8-4 shot advantage in the first half, but couldn't find the back of the cage for a second time.
Towson began to turn up the pressure in the second half, holding a 10-5 shot advantage but Ward came up big. Five of her six saves came in the second while senior Marie Mignogna added a defensive stop as well to clinch the Mountain Hawks' first win of the season. In the process, Lehigh defeated Towson for a second straight season.
Final shots were 14-13 in favor of the Tigers while Towson had 12 penalty corners to seven for the Mountain Hawks. Ward finished with six saves across Varacallo who made four.
Lehigh looks to carry the momentum into its next game as the Mountain Hawks host Georgetown on Friday at 6 p.m.
