Lehigh earns impressive 4-0 shutout over Georgetown

9/13/2013 8:43:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Four different Mountain Hawks scored a goal while the defense pitched its second straight shutout as the Lehigh field hockey team downed Georgetown 4-0 on Friday evening. It marked the first time in nine years that the Mountain Hawks pitched back-to-back shutouts. Lehigh allowed only six Hoyas shots, five on goal as freshman goalkeeper Julia Ward turned them all away for the clean sheet.

"I thought the game was great," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. "There was excellent effort from everyone on the team. They played great today."

A pair of freshmen connected just 1:36 into the game to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead. Gabby Tofig found reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week Marissa Glatt for the goal, marking Glatt's third straight game with a tally. It was the sign of things to come as three of Lehigh's four goals on the evening came from freshmen.

Just over 10 minutes later, freshman Amanda Granger fired a shot from the top of the circle. Georgetown goalie Rosalle Nolen made the save, but Tofig converted the rebound for a 2-0 advantage at 11:58.

Sophomore Lindsey Schott scored her goal second of the season at 26:16, making it 3-0 after finishing a rebound of her own following a penalty corner.

Lehigh held a 19-4 first-half shot advantage, and that momentum continued in the second when the Mountain Hawks outshot the Hoyas 10-2. Playing her first collegiate game, freshman Aislinn Bryan scored to make it 4-0. The Emmaus, Pa. native finished a nifty pass from junior Steph Fratoni following a succession of shots off a corner.

Final shots were 29-6 in favor of Lehigh while penalty corners were 13-6 Mountain Hawks. Ward posted five saves across Nolen who made 12.

Lehigh posted consecutive shutouts for the first time since Sept. 11 and Sept. 12 of 2004 when the Mountain Hawks defeated Robert Morris (9-0) and Davidson (3-0), respectively. The 4-0 victory was Lehigh's largest margin of victory since beating Siena 4-0 on Sept. 22, 2010.

"We've been working really hard staying low and being able to execute," said Blue. "They've been doing that, especially these last two games. I'm really proud of Julia and I'm proud of the whole defensive line back there. They've really been stepping up."

Lehigh will look for its third straight win on Sunday when it travels to Monmouth to face the Hawks. Gametime is set for 1 p.m.

"We like winning, so we want to keep that momentum going, keep working hard and take it one game at a time," said Blue.
