WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Lehigh field hockey team hung with Monmouth, which included an edge in penalty corners, but it wasn't enough in a 4-2 loss on Sunday afternoon. Monmouth opened a 4-0 lead, but the Mountain Hawks fought within two with more than five minutes still remaining. The loss is Lehigh's first in three games, ending the Mountain Hawks' shutout streak at 154:41 in the process.
Â
"We played well in spurts, but didn't capitalize on our opportunities," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Blue. "Caitlin Bryan, Marissa Glatt, Amanda Granger, Kassidy Green and Kat Kneizys played well."
Â
Monmouth opened the scoring at the 14:41 mark, ending Lehigh's impressive shutout streak at more than 150 minutes. The Mountain Hawks were riding two straight shutouts for the first time since 2004.
Â
Monmouth's Trish O'Dwyer scored the team's second goal, and second straight off a penalty corner, at the 25:27 mark to take a 2-0 lead at the half.
Â
The Hawks eventually extended their lead to 4-0 approaching 10 minutes remaining in regulation, but Lehigh wouldn't go quietly. Glatt, the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week, scored in her fourth straight game, deflecting a shot from sophomore Caitlin Bryan to pull within 4-1 at the 60:07 mark.
Â
Sophomore Lindsey Schott scored for a second straight game at 64:02 off a penalty stroke, pulling the Mountain Hawks within two. However, Lehigh couldn't get another shot off as Monmouth walked away with the victory.
Â
Final shots were 13-12 in favor of Monmouth while Lehigh held an 11-7 edge in penalty corners. Freshman Julia Ward made seven saves in goal across Monmouth's Amanda Westerweller with four.
Â
Lehigh returns to action on Saturday when it heads to Bucknell for the start of Patriot League play against the Bison. Gametime on the 21st is set for 11 a.m.
