BETHLEHEM, Pa.– The reigning Patriot League champion Lehigh women's golf team is set to begin their championship defense as the fall season tees of Saturday at the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa.
After claiming a league title in her inaugural season, second year head coach Judy Dwyer leads a roster of nine women into the 2013-14 season. After losing three players to graduation including Patriot League Player of the Year Chelsea Michalek, there are certainly opportunities for new and returning players to showcase their skills in the upcoming season.
Nicole Feierberg is certainly one of the returning players ready to take her game to the next level. The sophomore from Highland Park, Ill. competed in eight of Lehigh's nine tournaments, finishing eighth at the Patriot League Championship, as she took home Patriot League Outstanding Rookie of the Year honors.
The Mountain Hawks will also look for senior Crystal Lee of Mahwah, N.J. for leadership and production this fall. An All-Patriot League selection last season, Lee tied for sixth at the Patriot League Championship, played all competitive rounds, and is the low returning member on the team with an 80.1 stroke average.
Junior Kelly Moylan from North East, Pa. joins Lee as a returning All-Patriot League selection for the Mountain Hawks. Moylan, who finished tied for second at last year's Lehigh Palm Beach Invitational, also earned a spot on the Academic All-Patriot League team.
Sophomore Tess Jennings, juniors Alyssa Scheyd and Melanie Dickens, and senior Elle Sander also return for the defending champs. Two freshmen, (redacted) and Elizabeth McGarrigle join Lehigh and round out the final roster.
This weekend's Bucknell Invitational will be a 54-hole event with play beginning at 8:30 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. The 17-team field includes two entries for the host Bison. Lehigh will also see Patriot League foes Navy and Boston University. The Terriers won this tournament a year ago while the Mountain Hawks finished sixth in the 15 team field. Lehigh returned to the Bucknell Golf Course in April and held off the host Bison to claim the inaugural Patriot League Women's Golf Championship.
Four tournaments after Bucknell are set for the fall schedule. Two more trips in September including tournaments at Princeton and the prestigious Course at Yale begins September 14th and 20th, respectively. The Mountain Hawks then travel to Piscataway, N.J. for the Rutgers Invitational on October 14 before hosting the annual Lehigh Invitational October 27-28 at Saucon Valley Country Club.
Lehigh's spring schedule is still to be determined but the Mountain Hawks will host the Patriot League Championship April 19-20 at Saucon Valley.
