BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh women's rowing team will wrap up its season on Friday when it heads to Worcester, Mass. for the Patriot League Championships on Lake Quinsigamond. The Mountain Hawks look to carry the moment from a successful Dad Vail Regatta and continue their improvement while competing for a Patriot League Title.
The championships are following the Dad Vail Regatta this season, unlike the past.
“There are a lot of positives having the Patriot League Championships later,” said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. “One is that before, we were always going into exams. Now, we can really focus on boat speed and how to get a boat to go a little bit faster. Before, we were going into a very stressful part of the year for the student-athletes. They always did a great job with it, but hopefully now we can up the game a little bit.”
Four women's crews advanced to the semifinals at last weekend's Dad Vail Regatta, with the Freshmen Eight and Freshmen Four reaching the finals and the Freshmen Eight taking home a bronze medal. The Varsity Four and Varsity Eight made the semis.
“On the women's side, we had a great weekend at Dad Vails,” said Conley. “We've definitely improved from previous years and we're looking to have that improvement pay off at the Patriots.”
The Mountain Hawks came in fifth at last year's championship to improve upon the year before. Lehigh hopes to continue to make progress on Friday, and compete for a championship in the process.
“It's sort of anybody's game which is nice,” said Conley. “Navy and Bucknell are going to be fast; we know that out of the gate having raced them. But at the same point, we've been getting faster too. It's going to be a pretty tight race across the board in all three events. With it being the automatic qualifier for the NCAAs this year, that adds another factor to the fun part.”
The Varsity Four will race at 8:10 a.m., Second Varsity Eight at 8:30 and Varsity Eight at 8:50.
