AMBLER, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team suffered a 9-3 defeat at Temple in round one of the Liberty Bell Classic on Wednesday. The Mountain Hawks dropped to 11-10 on the season and will host Saint Joseph's in the next round of tournament games Tuesday. The Owls sit at 9-11 on the season.

Temple scored five of its nine runs from the sixth inning on and faced six different Lehigh pitchers.

“We threw a lot of pitchers at them and Temple was just able to scratch and claw and pull away late,” Lehigh head coach Sean Leary said.

Daniel Dragos hit an RBI single off freshman starter Kevin Long, but Lehigh got the run back on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Pat Walshe in the fourth inning. The Owls scored two runs in the fourth on a David Hall double and an RBI groundout by Andrew Nist. The team got another run on a Dragos sacrifice fly in the fifth. Lehigh responded with a single from junior Joe Abeln that scored junior Tyler Brong and Walshe raked an RBI double off Connor Staskey to cut the Temple lead to 4-3 in the middle of the sixth.

Senior Tom O'Malley was tagged for three earned runs in the bottom half of the inning however, as Jordan Queja and Henry Knabe had consecutive extra base hits to put the Owls up 7-3. Peterson and Dragos also had RBI hits off sophomore Rene Tato to put Lehigh out of reach.

The Mountain Hawks' three through six hitters went a combined 6-for-14, as Abeln and Brong paced the offense with 2-for-3 performances at the plate and one run apiece. Walshe finished with a pair of RBI. Derek Peterson led the Owls, hitting 3-for-4 with two RBI. Dragos went 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Out of the combined 13 pitchers that threw in the game, Tim McCarthy was credited with the win and Macaione got the loss after surrendering an earned run and two hits in the fourth inning. Lehigh pitching had just three walks in the game, but struck out only two Temple batters.

Lehigh will open Patriot League play when it faces Lafayette in a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday beginning at noon. The Brown and White will play host to Saint Joseph's in round two of the Liberty Bell Classic at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday after Saint Joseph's lost to Delaware 17-3.
