Lehigh impresses in field events during outdoor opener

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Strong performances in field events highlighted the Lehigh men's track and field team's outdoor season opener, the Philadelphia College Classic, on Saturday.
“We showed were strong, fit and ready to perform, and I can only see good things in the future,” Lehigh head coach Matt Utesch said.
Senior captain Chris Buck won the hammer with a throw of 49.56 meters, while junior Benjamin Beauchamp came in third with a mark of 47.23 meters. Senior Ricky Okoye competed in the discus and javelin, finishing third in both events with distances of 44.27 meters and 52.86 meters, respectively. Freshman Christopher Foley and sophomore Ryan Rhodes represented Lehigh in the shot put, while freshman Cody Israel participated in the long jump and triple jump. In the running events, sophomore Robert Hugin finished second in the 400 meter hurdles with a team-best 58.36 seconds. Freshman Benjamin Konigsberg clocked in at just over a minute with a time of 1:01.8 in the event. Israel and freshman Chris Coffin also represented the Mountain Hawks in the 400 meter hurdles.
The Brown and White had six top-20 finishes in the 5,000-meter run, as freshman Evan Hardy led the way with a fourth place finish and a time of 14:50.49. Sophomore Simon Voorhees (15:09.33), sophomore Nicholas Ward (15:14.56) and freshman Sean Burke (15:25.52) finished 11th, 14th and 16th in the event, respectively. Freshman Peter Schwarzenberg, senior Ryan Knouse, sophomore Daniel Reilly and freshman Eric Stahl rounded out Lehigh's finishers in the event.
Members of Lehigh's squad will compete at the Winthrop Invite on Friday and the Lafayette 7 Way on Saturday.
