Lucas ties career HR mark as Lehigh takes two Thursday

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Lehigh softball team snapped its three game losing streak with two very different wins Thursday at the Rebel Spring Games. The Mountain Hawk bats awakened for 13 runs in a 13-2, five-inning win over Saint Peter's in Thursday's first contest, and then junior Ashley Quigley tossed a one-hit shutout as the Brown and White blanked Wagner 7-0 in the nightcap.
With the two wins Thursday, Lehigh moves back to .500 on the season at 6-6-1.
Liz Lucas went 3-for-3 with four runs batted in against the Peahens, including a three-run home run in the first inning. The home run was the first of the season for Lucas and the 23rd of her career, which ties the senior catcher with Lisa Sweeney '09 for Lehigh's career home run record.
The Mountain Hawks were limited to just six total hits in two losses Tuesday, but bounced back quickly, scoring three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first against Saint Peter's (3-18). A hit-and-run double play erased a leadoff walk, but freshman Morgan Decker opened the scoring with a home run to straightaway centerfield, her second of the season. Lehigh then put together three consecutive singles, and with the aid of a passed ball, the third single, from freshman Jessica Calvini, plated two more runs to up the Mountain Hawks' lead to 3-0.
Lehigh broke the game open with five runs in the second inning. Senior Rosie Roessel led off with a walk, stole second, and scored on a single by freshman Alexis Watanabe, who went 2-for-3. The Mountain Hawks again put together a string of two out hits, as three batters after Watanabe's RBI single, Lucas drove her in with a single. Sophomore Cassie Waggy followed with a two-run double and later scored on a single by classmate Emma Capetz to put Lehigh up by eight after two innings. Waggy also went 2-for-3 in the opener.
Saint Peter's scored both of its runs and recorded all three of its hits in the top of the third, but Lehigh answered with four more runs in the bottom of the frame. Once again, Roessel drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and scored on a Watanabe single. Following a fly out and a single by Decker, Lucas drilled her record-tying home run to put Lehigh up 12-2. The Mountain Hawks tacked on one run in the fourth as Roessel drew her third leadoff walk of the game and came around to score on a pinch-hit single by freshman Carissa Zito.
Senior Becca Bliss earned the win for Lehigh in the pitcher's circle, allowing two runs on three hits in four innings to improve to 3-3 on the season. Junior Kelsey Lee pitched a scoreless fifth to close out the win.
Lee Harrison took the loss for the Peahens, allowing eight runs (six earned) on seven hits in 1.2 innings.
Quigley's pitching was the story for Lehigh against Wagner as the junior flirted with a no-hitter en route to her fourth career shutout. The right-hander retired the first 13 batters she faced and kept the Seahawks without a hit through six innings, before Brenda Bott singled leading off the seventh. Quigley picked up her first win of the season (1-1) after issuing two walks and striking out two in a complete-game effort.Lehigh mustered just four hits against Wagner, but the Mountain Hawks drew 12 walks and benefitted from three Seahawk errors. The Mountain Hawks threatened in the first three innings but did not score until the fourth when Decker provided enough offense with a two-run single to left that scored Roessel and Watanabe. Decker scored Lehigh's third run in the sixth inning on a wild pitch after Olivia Zwick walked the bases loaded. Lehigh added two more runs when Waggy reached on an error with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh.
The Mountain Hawks will wrap-up action at the Rebel Spring Games with two games on Friday as Lehigh will face North Dakota at 11 a.m. and Columbia at 1 p.m. Lehigh fell 5-3 to UND on Sunday and already owns two wins over Columbia earlier this season at the Towson Invitational.
