Lehigh downs Saint Francis (Pa.) 5-2 for first spring win

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's tennis team posted its first victory of the season on Sunday, as the Mountain Hawks downed Saint Francis (Pa.) 5-2 at the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks captured the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 flights, then captured four of six singles matches to earn their first victory as Lehigh improves to 1-2 on the season.
The doubles point came down to the No. 3 flight. Lehigh's top team of junior Jenai Bilimoria and sophomore Abby Farrell won 8-2 over Rafaela Panizza and Lucy Jasso, but the Red Flash won at No. 2 doubles as Alex Sachs and Shivani Patel downing junior Jill Sloand and sophomore Emily Bruch 8-3. With the doubles point on the line, sophomore Molly Brooks and freshman Ali Kaminetsky pulled through for Lehigh, clinching the first point of the match with an 8-3 win over Camila Diaz and Jennifer Yearly.
The first four singles flights were all tightly contested, with two of the four matches needed three sets to be decided. Sachs outlasted Bruch 6-4, 7-6 at No. 4 singles to put Saint Francis on the board, while Bilimoria rallied from an early first set hole to win 7-6, 6-4 over Panizza at No. 1 singles.
Kaminetsky won the first set over Jasso at No. 3 singles, but Jasso rallied to take the next two sets by 6-3 scores. Farrell dropped the first set to Patel at No. 2 singles but came storming back to win 6-3 in the second set and 7-5 in the third.
At No. 6 singles, Sloand helped secure the win for the Mountain Hawks with a convincing 6-0, 6-0 win over Yearly, while Brooks won a ten point tiebreak over Diaz 10-7 to win at No. 5 singles after dropping the first set.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Thursday when they host Rutgers at 3 p.m. inside the Lewis Tennis Center.
