BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Nineteen men and 11 women on the Lehigh track and field teams will travel to Boston this weekend for the IC4A and ECAC Championships, hoping to end their indoor seasons on a high note. The select athletes qualified based on predetermined standards and will be competing against the best of the best from Division I schools in the northeast. Both the men's IC4A Championships and the women's ECAC Championships will take place simultaneously at Boston University.
Two weeks have passed since the Mountain Hawks competed at the Patriot League Championships at West Point, N.Y. Standout athletes for the men, who placed fourth for the third year in a row, included first place finishers senior Devin Monroe in the 200 meter dash and sophomore Lou Adesida in the high jump. Junior Brooke Astor led the women with a first place finish in the pentathlon and a second place showing in the 60 meter hurdles, one of eight women to take home a title over five events. With a strong showing of 106.33 points, the Mountain Hawk women finished just four points out of second place.
Junior Jessica Kendzor will compete after winning the 800 meter run with an ECAC qualifying time, as will Lehigh's Patriot League championship-winning 4x800 and Distance Medley Relay teams.
“To prepare for the meet I am fine tuning the technique I had been working on for previous meets,” she says.
That fine tuning might include the big move of adding another spin to her throw, which could give her an advantage over her competitors. Lemon and teammate Jamil Ataman both met the ECAC qualifying standard at the Patriot League Championships.
While the majority of the team is back to the tough workouts reminiscent of pre-season, those competing this weekend have had a relatively light week. They are focused on staying limber, sharpening their techniques, and making sure that they are in top physical and mental condition.
“Some of the best athletes in the Northeast will be at this meet so there will be a lot of competition,” he says. “I'm excited to go and I think as a team we will do well.”
Other members of the Lehigh men's team who posted IC4A qualifying marks at the Patriot League Championships include junior Jimmy Miller in the 5000 meters, and the 4x800 and Distance Medley Relay teams.
Action at the IC4A/ECAC Championships begins Friday at 4 p.m. with the men's heptathlon and the women's pentathlon.
On Saturday, the men's IC4A action begins at 10 a.m. while the women will take to the track at 3 p.m. Sunday's final day of competition at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center begins at 9:30 a.m.
