BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team begins a season-long hunt for a Patriot League Championship when the Mountain Hawks host the Fast Times Before Finals meet on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7, at Rauch Fieldhouse. The Mountain Hawks will host seven other schools in the season-opening event that is set to start at 5 p.m. on Friday and resume at 9 a.m. Saturday.
"Preseason training went well and we've been able to start acclimating the freshmen," said head coach Matt Utesch. "This meet will be a great chance for everyone to take what they've rehearsed in practice and really put it to the test in a competition atmosphere."
Lehigh will host rival Lafayette in addition to Penn, Moravian, Millersville (women only), East Stroudsburg, DeSales and The College of New Jersey in the unscored meet.
The Mountain Hawks aim to improve on their fourth place finish at last year's Indoor Patriot League Championships. To do so, Utesch knows his squad will need to replace a talented group of graduated seniors.
"It's always hard to replace graduated athletes, but our leadership academy does such a great job at developing our kids' abilities," said Utesch. "We have kids that have been through the academy and are in a good position to step in and take over."
The men will be captained by seniors Patrick Ciez and John Ciavardelli, along with two members of the cross country team. Seniors Tyler Mueller and Jimmy Miller handled captain duties last year and are returning runners this season. The captains have established successful careers as Mountain Hawks, with Ciez being named second-team All-Patriot League a season ago and Ciavardelli earning a spot on the Academic All-Patriot League squad.
The Mountain Hawks welcome a class of 12 freshmen onto the men's team this year. The newcomers will be joined by 13 sophomores, 17 juniors and 12 seniors.
"The freshmen have done very well athletically through preseason," said Utesch. "They fit right in. We're fortunate that we have a lot of time to train them and work with them leading into the season."
The Mountain Hawks will return a balanced squad that will be tough competition in multi events, jumps, throws, sprints and distance.
Senior Ryan Paquin will lead the Mountain Hawk men in the multi events. Paquin claimed a Patriot League title in last year's outdoor decathlon after claiming third in the indoor heptathlon.
Senior Benjamin Beauchamp leads the charge in the throws for the Mountain Hawk men. The electrical engineering major was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team last season and competed in the weight throw and shot put at the Patriot League Championships a season ago.
The jumps will be spearheaded by Ciez, a two-time Patriot League Champion in the high jump, and junior Adeolu Adesida. The duo finished first and second at last season's outdoor Patriot League Championships to each earn a bid to the first round of NCAA Championships.
The Mountain Hawks will be without graduated senior Devin Monroe, but return a strong core of sprinters into the 2013-14 campaign. Senior Martin Otieno holds the school record in both the indoor 200 and indoor 4x400 meter relay. Otieno was joined on the record-setting 4x400 team by juniors Justin Mahoney and Christopher Watson, who both hope to continue their successful Lehigh careers this season.
On the distance side, Mountain Hawk cross country runners will look to build upon their already successful fall. Mueller leads the charge after becoming Lehigh's first-ever individual Patriot League Champion and finishing 67th at the NCAA Championship race. Mueller holds the school record in the outdoor 10,000 meter and will look to continue his standout senior year in the Rauch Fieldhouse.
The Mountain Hawks return talented athletes in every area and are excited about the prospect of competing for a championship.
"Our biggest strength is our balance," said Utesch. "We have top-notch kids in every event, so our ability to finish high in all aspects will lead to success."
