BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh Hall of Fame member the Rev. J. Daniel Nolan '58 passed away on Monday, December 16. A standout athlete in football, basketball and baseball at Lehigh, Nolan was inducted into the Roger S. Penske/Lehigh Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996.

Nolan led Lehigh to a 22-5 record over three seasons as quarterback, including an 8-1 season in 1957 en route to the inaugural Lambert Cup, which recognizes the best team in the east. He was named a college division All-American in 1957 and was selected to play in the North-South game. Over his career, he passed for 2,317 yards and 16 touchdowns, Lehigh records at the time.Â

In 1958, Nolan signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers and enjoyed a brief stint with the club before becoming a Roman Catholic priest. He earned his B.A. in Metallurgy from Lehigh in 1958 and did graduate work at Carnegie Tech while with the Steelers.

The J. Daniel Nolan Award was established by Lehigh in 1961. It is presented annually to the outstanding first year male athlete at Lehigh's end-of-year Athletics Convocation.
