BETHLEHEM, Pa. The Mountain Hawks will be hunting for their fourth straight win on Wednesday night in Columbus when Lehigh faces Ohio State. The 7 p.m. contest will be Lehigh's first meeting with a Big Ten conference team.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 2-0 road trip to New England that ended with a 65-57 win at Rhode Island on Saturday afternoon. Career-high scoring efforts from sophomore Amina Affini and freshman Kayla Burton helped lift Lehigh past Rhody, while sophomore Kerry Kinek recorded her 500th career point in just her 36th game as a Mountain Hawk. Burton notched 14 points while Affini chipped in 13. Junior Katie O'Reilly tallied 11 points, while senior Lindsay Hoskins and sophomore Elizabeth Sharlow tossed in six apiece.
The Mountain Hawks finished the game shooting 47.9 percent (23-for-48) from the floor and 42.9 percent (6-for-14) from three-point range. Lehigh held Rhode Island to 35.7 percent (20-for-56) from the field while also forcing 22 Rhody turnovers. The Rams out-rebounded Lehigh 42-29.
With the win, Lehigh accumulated three road wins this season to begin 3-0 away from home for the first time since the 1984-85 season. That squad defeated Philadelphia Textile (77-60), Allentown (61-42) and Marywood (76-41) in its first three road games.
Lehigh seniors Hilary Weaver and Hoskins, along with sophomore Affini, all hail from Ohio.
Ohio State carries a 5-2 record into Wednesday's game with the Mountain Hawks. The Buckeyes most recently played three games in three days as part of the Basketball Hall of Fame Challenge.
The Buckeyes captured wins over Old Dominion on Friday and Marist on Saturday before dropping a 64-52 decision to Bowling Green Sunday afternoon at Value City Arena.
The Buckeyes were never able to sustain any rhythm offensively as they shot just 25 percent in the loss to Bowling Green. Despite 12 three-pointers by the Falcons, Ohio State kept the game within reach until Bowling Green's Jillian Halfhill scored seven consecutive points, turning a two-point Falcon lead into nine with 11:50 left. Ohio State never recovered from that point and did not get closer than eight points the rest of the way. The Buckeyes shot 24 of 26 from the line, but Bowling Green's outside shooting was too much to overcome.
Ameryst Alston leads the Buckeyes with 19.3 points per game, while Darryce Moore leads the rebounding charge with an average of 7.3 per game.
Wednesday's meeting will be the first ever contest between Lehigh and Ohio State. It will also be the Mountain Hawks' first game against a Big Ten team.
The Mountain Hawks are 3-5 all-time against teams from Ohio. Lehigh claimed its first win against Akron in 2010 to improve to 1-2 against the Zips. The Mountain Hawks are 0-2 against Ohio University, 1-1 against Bowling Green and 1-0 against Wright State.
Following Wednesday night's game, the Mountain Hawks will have a break in action until December 9 when they host Saint Peter's inside Stabler Arena at 5 p.m.
