BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Lehigh men's soccer team will host defending Patriot League champions Lafayette for the 110th meeting between the two rivals on Wednesday night. The game will be played at Ulrich Sports Complex at 7 p.m. and will air for free live on the Patriot League Network.
"I've been in the Patriot League for 22 years and the Lehigh-Lafayette rivalry has been exciting every year," said head coach Dean Koski. "We know what the rivalry means to alumni and our guys appreciate the uniqueness and importance of it."
Both of the teams are looking for their first Patriot League win of the season, with the winner gaining a slight edge in the standings.
"When we play Lafayette we're always playing to win for two reasons," said Koski. "We want to win and get three points in Patriot League play, but we also want to win to beat Lafayette."
The Mountain Hawks enter the game 1-6-1 overall, with two losses in league play. Lafayette will come to town with one Patriot League loss and a 2-1-6 overall mark. The Leopards head into Wednesday night's matchup having not played in over ten days. Lafayette fell to Colgate on September 28, which served as the Leopards' most recent game. The team was scheduled to host Navy on Saturday but the game was postponed due to the government shutdown.
Lehigh is coming off a tough loss to Bucknell on Saturday night in which the offense was stymied once again, generating just four shots on goal. The Bison scored two early goals and notched another on a late-game penalty kick, handing the Mountain Hawks a loss.
Senior co-captain Ben Wysocki leads the team with a goal and an assist. Freshman Danny Gonzalez has scored the season's other goal. Senior James Meyerkord, the team's other co-captain, is still looking for his first goal of the season despite leading the team with 15 shots. Junior Brian Suchoski has tallied seven shots on goal thus far this season.
"We want to make sure our players are healthy and rested," said Koski. "They've been challenged lately and more tired than normal because of 4 o'clock exams. I'm hoping they'll feel more invigorated and less encumbered for Wednesday's game."
Lafayette is led by senior Peter Adubato who has a team-leading seven points on the season behind three goals and an assist. The team is anchored in net by senior Nathan McDonald who boasts a .570 goals against average with 33 saves and an 84.6 save percentage.
Lehigh leads the all-time series between the longtime rivals 54-45-10. Lafayette has had the upper hand in recent years, winning the last two meetings by a score of 1-0.
Following Wednesday night's game, Lehigh will head north on Saturday for another Patriot League matchup against newcomer Boston University. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
