Lehigh rowing wraps up first race of fall season

SHAMOKIN DAM, Pa. - The Lehigh rowing team competed in its first race of the fall on Saturday as the Mountain Hawks held strong against intrastate foes Bucknell and Drexel at the Head Race on the Susquehanna River.

"It was a very different race style than we ever raced before," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "All the boats lined up at a staggered start and started at the same time. It was a very chaotic style of racing, but I thought the crews handled it well."
Â
The Women's Varsity Eight finished with a time of 22:39 while the Second Varsity finished in 21:26 tohelp highlight the team's effort.
Â
"The women showed maturity, especially for a young crew," said Conley. "Going up against two of the top crews that we'll face this spring, we hung with them and I think we can build from that."
Â
On the men's side, the Varsity Eight came in 21:29, Second Varsity Eight in 20:51 and Freshmen Eight in 22:11. The Second and Third Freshmen Eight finished in 22:46 and 25:23, respectively.

"We raced even lineups and for the first time since I've been here, we held speed with Bucknell which gives us good feelings as we train further into the fall," said Conley.
Â
Lehigh returns to action next Saturday, competing in Navy Day on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
