BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Coming off a big Patriot League win against Loyola on Saturday night, the Lehigh men's soccer team hosts Stony Brook Tuesday in search of a similar result. The game will be played at the Ulrich Sports Complex at 7 p.m. and can be viewed for free on the Patriot League Network.
Lehigh heads into the matchup with a 2-9-1 overall record that includes a 1-4-0 Patriot League mark. The Mountain Hawks were able to notch their first league win Saturday night when they hosted league newcomer Loyola. Freshman Gianfranco Giammatteo capitalized on a defensive miscue from the Greyhounds in the 20th minute to score his first career goal, which proved to be all the Mountain Hawks needed. Strong defensive play shut down a talented Loyola offense as Lehigh played to a 1-0 shutout win.
Senior Ben Wysocki leads the team in points on the season with three behind a goal and an assist. Giammatteo now sits in a tie for second with two points after the weekend game-winner. Senior James Meyerkord, who led the team in the category last season, is still looking for his first points of 2013 but leads the team with 23 shots. Freshman keeper Jacob Gottwald has saved 73.3% of opponents' shots and has tallied a 1.33 goals against average.
Stony Brook is coming off a tough 3-2 loss to UMass Lowell on Saturday. After trailing 3-0 midway through the second half, the Seawolves were able to net two late goals before time ran out. The Seawolves now carry a 5-7-1 overall record and are 0-3-1 in their last four games.
Stony Brook is led on offense by senior Will Casey and sophomore Martin Giordano. The midfield duo sits at one-two for the team-lead in points on the season with nine seven, respectively. Casey also leads the team in goals with four while Giordano ranks first in assists. The team is anchored in net by redshirt freshman Jason Orban who enters the game with a 1.29 goals against average.
Tuesday night's game will be the fourth all-time meeting between the two teams, with the series even at 1-1-1. Last season, the Seawolves got the better of Lehigh, playing to a 1-0 overtime win at home.
Following Tuesday's matchup, Lehigh will start a tough upcoming schedule as it hits the road for a showdown with first-place Army on Saturday night. The Mountain Hawks close out the season with four league matchups as they look to make a late season playoff push.
