Pierce finishes 36th at NCAA First Round Thursday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Lehigh women's track and field senior Katherine Pierce placed 36th in the 10,000 meter run at the NCAA First Round Thursday night to cap off a stellar season and career. The Alfred, Maine native crossed the finish line with a time of 37:08.14, which was only two minutes off of her school-record time.
Pierce qualified for her first NCAA First Round with a time of 35:05.94 at the Stanford Invitational, which set a new school record while crushing her own Lehigh record of 35:42.68.
 
Pierce earned All-Patriot League honors this season after placing second in the 10,000 meter run at the Patriot League Championships. Pierce also had a successful season off the track as she was named to the Academic All-Patriot League team.
 
The top 12 finishers in each event in the NCAA First Round earn All-American status and advance to the NCAA Championships June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.  

Senior Evans Kosgei is the other Mountain Hawk to qualify for the NCAA First Round and he will race Friday night at 8:50 p.m. and will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. It is Kosgei's second consecutive year qualifying for the NCAA Regional in the 3000m steeplechase as he placed 30th in last year's event with a time of 9:03.
