Mountain Hawks shine at Penn Relays, Lehigh Games

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's track and field team had a stellar weekend as the Mountain Hawks competed at the prestigious Penn Relays and then hosted the Lehigh Games on Goodman Campus. A couple of school records were broken including one by the 4X400 relay team which took home a medal for winning its heat at the Penn Relays.

"We have won a few events in the past at the Penn Relays, but never a relay there, so to get that plaque is really something special," said head coach Matt Utesch. "That is the first time we have ever done it since I've been here. It makes me really proud and it's a really cool accomplishment."

That 4X400m relay team of Danielle Albergo, Khaaleedah Smith, Melissa Knapp and Kristin Slotnick ran a school record time of 3:52.91, surpassing the previous record of 3:53.08 which was set in 2008.
The DMR team of Julia Perry, Elizabeth McManus, Jessica Kendzor and Savannah Plombon also set a new school record with a time of 11:51.27.
The 4X100m relay team of Smith, Alexandra Doersam, Slotnick and Albergo also had a great showing, finishing with a time of 48.03.
E'Lana Lemon threw 51.12m to qualify her for the ECAC Championships while Jamil Ataman threw 49.4m in the hammer throw as the duo placed 15th and 19th, respectively.
In the shot put, Rebecca Duhamel threw 12.17m which placed her 27th. Duhamel then threw 39.76m in the discus.
Alexandra Doersam jumped 5.27m in the long jump which led her to an 18th place finish.
Katherine Pierce ran 9:54.68 in the 3000m Championship race which qualified her for the ECAC Championships, surpassing the time of 9:56.24 needed.
At the Lehigh Games, the Mountain Hawks continued to shine.
In the 800m run, Lehigh took six of the top eight spots as Lauren Pietrosh won the event with a time of 2:15.82. Lauren Sternick was second (2:18.04), Catherine Tobiasen was third (2:18.19) and Ingrid Simon was fourth (2:18.41). Alexdra Neville was seventh (2:20.32) while Victoria Mullane was eighth (2:22.25).
Rebecca Duhamel took first in a pair of events. She won the discus with a throw of 41.94m. Lehigh also took second and third in the event with Katie Baglio (38.42) and Lemon (36.71), respectively. Duhamel then won the shot put with a distance of 13.06m.
The Mountain Hawks third winner came in the hammer throw as Lemon won the event with a distance of 54.66m while Ataman finished right behind her with a distance of 54.16m.
Albergo placed second in the 100m dash with a time of 13.00. Knapp took second in the 400m dash with a time of 59.49. Elanor Meyers took fourth in the event with a time of 1:00.57. Meyers also finished third in the 200m dash with a time of 27.68.
Amanda Gosselin was second in the 5000m run with a time of 18:34.99. Peggy Lai was sixth (19:32.93) in the event while Alyssa Autieri was eighth (20:26.76).
In the pole vault, Jonelle Jerwick placed second with a distance of 11-06. In the long jump, Doersam placed second with a distance of 5.33m while Serenah Polite was third with a distance of 5.31m. Polite was second in the triple jump with a distance of 10.76m, just 0.03m behind first. In the 100m hurdles, Polite placed third with a time of 15.70 while Natalie Bates was fifth with a time of 16.59.
Four Mountain Hawks placed in the Top 10 in the 1500m run led by Victoria Berard's fourth place finish with a time of 4:44.86. Hanna Pierce finished right behind her in fifth with a time of 4:48.75. Shannon Nelson placed seventh (4:52.77) while Marissa Galante tied for ninth (4:53.77).
Lehigh will look to use the momentum from its successful past few weekends as the Mountain Hawks will turn its attention to the Patriot League Championships next weekend in Worcester, Mass. with competition set for Friday, May 4 and Saturday May 5.
"It's a great weekend going into the Patriot League Championships," Utesch said. "We are firing on all cylinders. I think we are really ready to go and I'm looking forward to it."
