Lehigh drops doubleheader to No. 25 Cal Sunday

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Lehigh baseball team (2-5) fell 10-0 and 18-3 at No. 25 Cal (8-2) Sunday as the Mountain Hawks were swept on the weekend by a Golden Bears team that advanced to the second round of the 2011 College World Series. Lehigh was unable to overcome slow starts in both games Sunday. Lehigh's three runs on the day came off the bat of senior Cory Kent, who hit a pinch-hit three-run homer, the first of his career.
After scoring six of its nine runs with two-outs yesterday, Cal again put together a two-out rally to put Lehigh behind in the first inning. After a ground out and fly out, the Golden Bears managed a single and walk before sophomore Colin Gotzon gave up a two-run double and an RBI single as Lehigh trailed 3-0 after one.
In the top of the second, Lehigh had a chance to get some runs back after junior Alex Jacquez walked and senior Ryan Gajdos singled to put runners on first and second with one out. But the Mountain Hawks couldn't come up with the big hit as they were both stranded.
In the bottom half of the inning, Lehigh had a chance to get out unscathed but again, Cal scored three times with two outs. With runners on second and third and two outs, the Golden Bears produced a two-run double to make it 5-0. Lehigh then dropped a foul ball which would have gotten them out of the inning, but instead Cal singled home another run.
Senior Brendan McGaheran singled in the sixth and sophomore Tyler Brong hit a pinch-hit single in the seventh but the Mountain Hawks were unable to muster anything else.
Gotzon took the loss falling to 0-2 on the season. Junior Thomas O'Malley was successful slowing down Cal's offense as he went 3.1 innings allowing three hits and one run while Nick Maccaione pitched the final 2.2 innings without giving up a hit or run and struck out three.
Cal's Matt Flemer improved to 2-0, throwing 7.0 shutout innings and giving up three hits while striking out seven. Offensively, they were paced by Andrew Knapp and Chad Bunting whom combined to go 4-for-9 with six RBIs.
In game two, Lehigh again fell behind early. In the bottom of the first, Cal scored six runs, three of which were unearned after a couple of untimely errors by Lehigh. The Golden Bears tacked on four more in the third inning to lead 10-0. The Golden Bears went on to score eight more runs over the next four innings.
In the top of the eighth, freshman Connor Faust led off with a single and freshman John Elson followed with a walk. Kent – Lehigh's dominant closer – pinch hit for junior Casey Turner and drilled a three-run homer to left field to break a 16-inning scoreless streak for the Mountain Hawks..
Senior Luke Porter took the loss falling to 0-2 while Cal's Kyle Porter improved to 1-0. Offensively, Cal had 16 hits with four players having a multiple-hit game.
