EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh track and field teams turned in very impressive performances on day one of the Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Lehigh had four Patriot League Champions on the day, two of which broke school and Patriot League Championship records. The women currently sit in first place with 43 points while the men are in fourth place with 20 points.
"I am very pleased with our performances today," said Lehigh head coach Matt Utesch. "We have really set ourselves up in a good position. We set two meet records in the six events, which was very surprising. I knew the guys were capable of breaking these records, but the way it happened was incredible."
On the men's side, Evans Kosgei followed his strong efforts from the Penn Relays last week with an incredible performance on Saturday. Kosgei won the 10,000 meter run, clocking in at 30:20.08 to earn the Patriot League crown. Kosgei's time was not only a school record, but it was a Patriot League Championship record as well. Kosgei beat the old record from 2004, which was set by American's Matt Seymour.
The men's team earned another Patriot League Champion in the long jump. Steve Tutunjian, who has had an incredible spring season, posted a mark of 7.32 meters, which was a personal best for him and an IC4A qualifying distance.
On the women's side, Katherine Pierce won the women's 10,000 meter run immediately after Kosgei's win. Pierce clocked in at 36:22.58 to earn a Patriot League title in that event. The time for Pierce qualified her for ECACs and 10 points for the Mountain Hawks.
Lehigh's final Patriot League champ on the day came in the women's long jump. Doersam, who entered the weekend with a personal best of 5.68 meters, made huge strides. Joelle Neilson of Lafayette hit a distance of 5.75 meters. Navy's Ashley Bucholz hit a distance of 5.96. Doersam, who edged that distance with 5.97 her second jump, then hit her final jump at a distance of 6.03 meters, a Patriot League Championship record.
In the women's 100 meter dash preliminaries, Lehigh had a 6, 7, 8 finish from Kristin Slotnick, Alex Doersam and Khaaleedah Smith as they all qualified for tomorrow. Slotnick also qualified in the 200 meter dash, where she had the second best time of 25.36. Brooke Astor qualified in the 100 meter hurdles preliminaries with a time of 15.22.
The women also earned points in the 4x800 meter relay, as the team of Alexandra Neville, Julia Perry, Lauren Pietrosh and Jessica Kendzor clocked in at 9:09.74. That time was good enough for ECACS. In field events, Krista Belick earned two points in the pole vault with a distance of 3.25 meters. Emily Settle also earned second team All-Patriot League for finishing second in the hammer throw at 53.90 meters.
On the men's side, Devin Monroe qualified in the 200 meter dash preliminaries with a time of 21.99 seconds.
The Patriot League Championships will conclude tomorrow at approximately 4:30 p.m. Check back at LehighSports.com for updates.
