Mountain Hawks close season with Sunday split against Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Lehigh baseball team (24-21, 8-12) closed out the 2011 season with a doubleheader split with the Holy Cross Crusaders on Sunday. Lehigh took the first game, 6-3, on a good pitching performance by Luke Porter. Holy Cross took the second game by a score of 10-2.
In game one, Porter spun a nice game for Lehigh on the mound, as he went 5.1 innings, giving up three runs (one earned) and striking out seven batters. Thomas O'Malley came in and pitched a solid inning of relief and Cory Kent earned his eighth save of the season. Brendan McGaheran and Kevin Mihalik each belted homeruns for the Mountain Hawks.
In the top of the first inning, Lehigh struck immediately. The first two batters in the lineup, McGaheran and Billy Goldman, each grounded out giving Lehigh two outs. However, Andy Russell worked a two-out single and Kevin Mihalik nailed a two-run homer to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Brown and White.
Lehigh got another run in the second inning. Austin Borden had a leadoff single. Later in the inning, he scored on a wild pitch to make the score 3-0 Lehigh. Then in the bottom of the third, Russell and Mihalik each earned singles to put runners on first and second. They both would score on RBI singles from Casey Turner and Brendan Pifer. Holy Cross put itself on the board in the bottom of the third on two unearned runs, cutting the Mountain Hawks' lead to 5-2.
Things would get interesting in the bottom of the sixth, when Jordan Enos scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-3 in favor of Lehigh. However, the Mountain Hawks earned an insurance run in top of the seventh, when McGaheran homered to make the score 6-3. Kent came in and shut the door to earn Lehigh a game one victory.
In the second game, senior Ross Biggs had a nice game for the Mountain Hawks, as he collected two hits, along with McGaheran and Goldman. Lehigh was the first team on the board, as Joe Abeln and Biggs led off the inning with base hits. McGaheran then singled in Ablen to make the score 1-0 in favor of Lehigh. However, Holy Cross would strike with one run in the third and six runs in the fourth to make the score 7-1.
In the sixth inning with Holy Cross leading 9-1, McGaheran doubled and then scored on an RBI single by Goldman. That is all Lehigh would get though for the remainder of the game.
Lehigh finishes the season with a 24-21 overall record, the program's first winning season since 2005. 13 seniors wore a Lehigh uniform for the last time on Sunday. Billy Goldman leaves the program with 197 career hits, good for fifth in program history. Russell closes out a phenomenal career with 191 career hits and 18 homeruns, tied for second in program history.
