BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team (16-11, 1-3) had two tough losses on Sunday afternoon to close out the series with the Navy Midshipmen. The Mountain Hawks dropped the first game by a final score of 9-4 while the Mids also took game two, 12-2.
Seniors Kevin Mihalik and Austin Borden had strong days for the Mountain Hawks. Mihalik collected three hits on the day, including two in the second game. Borden had two hits and 3 RBI, including a two-run homer in the second game.
In game one, Navy got on the board early in the first inning, scoring on five unearned runs. With two outs, Alex Azor reached on a walk to give the Midshipmen life. Dave Milanes worked a two out walk as well to give Navy runners on first and second with two outs. An error by the Mountain Hawks allowed for one runner to score and then another four runs to score on base hits later in the inning. All the runs were unearned and Navy had a 5-0 lead.
Lehigh struck back with two runs in the second inning, as Logan Winchester and Andy Russell each singled with one out. Then, Kevin Mihalik loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Navy pitcher Ben Nelson plunked a second-straight Lehigh batter in Austin Borden to score the first run of the game for the Mountain Hawks. Casey Turner then grounded out into an RBI fielder's choice to shrink the Navy lead to 5-2.
Dan Ciccone took over on the mound for Lehigh and Navy responded in the second inning, with two more runs, one of which was unearned. The Mids had a 7-2 lead after two innings of play and upped its lead to 8-2 in the fourth inning on an RBI sac fly.
The Mountain Hawks showed a little bit of life in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Mihalik had a one out single. Borden then socked a two-run homer over the leftfield fence to cut the Navy lead to 8-4. That is as close Lehigh would get though, as Navy added an insurance run in the seventh and secured a 9-4 win.
In game two, Navy tallied three runs in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth to jump out to a fast 9-0 lead. Lehigh got on the board in the fifth inning. Brandon Sady led off the inning with a walk. He then stole second base, which set up a Jeff Wiand RBI single. Navy had a 9-1 lead after five. The Mountain Hawks earned a second run in the second on a double play groundout with the bases loaded.
Navy added three more runs, one in the seventh and two in the eighth, to increase its lead to 12-2, which ended as the final.
Lehigh will be back in action on Tuesday at 3:30 in the semifinals of the Liberty Bell Classic, where it will play host to the Delaware Blue Hens.
