WORCESTER, Mass. – The Lehigh women's rowing team put together a solid effort in the Patriot League Championships on Sunday, finishing in sixth place while nearly doubling its point-total from a year ago. The Mountain Hawks garnered 10 points on the day, improving by four from last season. Lehigh was led by its Second Varsity Eight, which posted a fourth-place finish.
“We're excited that overall, the team earned more points than they did last year, which shows we're improving,” said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. “The Second Varsity again had a great performance, placing fourth and showing that they do know how to race and perform under pressure. That was nice to see.”
The Second Varsity crew came in just behind Bucknell (6:57.2), Navy (6:59.6) and Holy Cross (7:07.4) with a time of 7:17.9. The Mountain Hawks placed ahead of MIT and Colgate.
The Varsity Eight got off to a strong start before struggling down the stretch to finish sixth.
“The varsity had a little rough second half of the race,” said Conley. “They were right in the mix in the first half, which was great. They were right there until the 1,000 meter mark, but they seemed to get overly excited and nervous by the fact they were there, so they fell off the pace. We let the excitement get the best of us a little bit, which was disappointing.”
Meanwhile, the Varsity Four placed sixth with a time of 9:08.8, but gained tremendous experience out of the regatta.
“The women's four struggled quite a bit, but got valuable experience that they'll be able to use next year.”
Bucknell captured its sixth-straight Patriot League Championship, garnering 33 total points. Navy came in second with 28, followed by Navy (28), Colgate (22), Holy Cross (21), MIT (12) and Lehigh (10).
“We're going to work on being mentally stronger as far as racing goes,” said Conley. “But moving forward, everyone has a positive feeling that the team's headed in the right direction.”
Both the Lehigh men's and women's rowing squads return to action on May 13 when they compete in the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia.
