Mountain Hawks sneak by Penn, 6-5

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh baseball team (22-15) picked up its fourth win in the last five games on Wednesday in a 6-5 mid-week non-conference victory over Penn. Jayme Edwards picked up his third win of the season and Steven Ball earned his first career save.
Billy Goldman went 3-for-4 on the day with 3 RBI and a double. Casey Turner also had a big day for Lehigh, drilling two doubles and driving in one runner. Edwards had a solid day on the mound, going 5.2 innings and giving up seven hits and one run.
Penn was the first team on the board as it picked up a run in the first inning. A Rick Brebner RBI double to left field gave the Quakers a 1-0 lead. Lehigh was silenced in the bottom of the inning, going down in order. The Mountain Hawks would strike after that.
In the bottom of the third with Penn still leading 1-0, Lehigh struck big. With one out, Jeff Wiand got things started when he was hit by a pitch. Brendan McGaheran then singled, advancing Wiand to second base. Billy Goldman then delivered the big blow, a two-run double, to give the Brown and White a 2-1 lead. Lehigh was not done though, as Goldman scored on a wild pitch and then Casey Turner cracked an RBI double to make the score 4-1. Brendan Pifer's RBI single capped off a five-run inning for the Mountain Hawks.
After two scoreless innings, Penn answered in the top of the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-2 in favor of Lehigh. Goldman earned another RBI though in the bottom half of the inning to help the Mountain Hawks regain a four-run lead.
Penn earned another run in the seventh, but Ryan Patrick was really solid in relief, as he went three innings and gave up only one earned run. Heading in to the ninth with a 6-3 lead, Patrick found himself in a jam. A two-base error caused runners to be on second and third. Then with the score 6-4, Steven Ball came in with two outs. Another run would score on a base-hit, but Ball forced a fly-out to Goldman to end the game and earned himself his first-career save.
Lehigh will open a four-game series with Bucknell this Saturday beginning at noon. Lehigh's final Patriot League series will be next weekend at Holy Cross.
