BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh baseball team (20-14, 5-5) picked up two big victories over first-place Army on Sunday afternoon in 3-2 and 8-6 wins over the Black Knights. Game one was highlighted by excellent pitching from Mike Lebo and the story of game two was the Lehigh offense. Kevin Mihalik hit a grand slam in the second game for the Brown and White.
In the first inning of game one, Army loaded the bases on two base-hits and a walk. With one out, Lebo escaped the big jam as he forced strikeout and flyout to hold the Black Knights scoreless. However, Lehigh was held hitless through the first four innings and Army struck first in the fourth inning, scoring two runs.
The Mountain Hawks cashed in with a big fifth inning as Mihalik broke up the no-hitter with a base-it to give Lehigh a good start. Logan Winchester also reached on a single and Austin Borden walked to load the bases for the Brown and White. Brendan Pifer, Chad Warga and Casey Turner were each credited with driving in runs for Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks had a 3-2 lead.
Lebo made it through the sixth inning and Cory Kent picked up his fifth save of the season for Lehigh. Lebo tossed six solid innings of two-run ball and struck out three batters.
In the bottom of the first inning of game two, Lehigh loaded the bases with no outs as Brendan McGaheran was hit by a pitch, Andy Russell singled and Billy Goldman walked. Mihalik then drilled a two-strike pitch over the left field fence for a grand slam to give Lehigh a big 4-0 lead. The Mountain Hawk power surge continued in the second inning when Goldman sent a home run over the right field fence. The Mountain Hawks led 5-0 after two.
In the top of the third, Army got on the board and made the score 5-2 as Ben Koenigsfeld and Clint Moore connected on back-to-back home runs.
Army began a rally in the fifth inning on an RBI single. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Lehigh jumped out to a 7-2 lead, which included a pinch-hit RBI double by Casey Turner. Then in the top of the sixth, Sean McIlroy delivered a three-run pinch-hit homer to cap off a four-run inning as the Black Knights cut the Lehigh lead to 7-6.
In the eighth inning, Chad Warga led off the inning by getting on base after being hit by a pitch. Brendan Pifer then sacrifice bunted Warga over to second, which set up a Brendan McGaheran RBI single. Lehigh had an 8-6 lead and Cory Kent came in to pick up his second save of the day as Lehigh completed the day with two wins over the Black Knights.
Lehigh will be back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. to close out its series with Army.
