Lehigh softball splits on second day of action in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Sophomore Liz Lucas homered in both games as Lehigh split on its second day of action Monday at the Rebel Spring Games. The Mountain Hawks scored five times in the third inning to defeat Detroit Mercy 7-3 in their first game of the day, but Indiana State scored seven times in the top of the first inning and held off a late rally to win 9-7 in game two.
After spotting Detroit (1-2) an early 1-0 lead, Lehigh tied the game in the top of the second inning on an RBI groundout by junior Jen Colquhoun before blowing the game open with five runs in the top of the third.
The Mountain Hawks (2-7) opened the third inning with three straight hits: a leadoff single by freshman Kristin Taft, an RBI double by sophomore Kristen Mitchell and an RBI single by junior Audra Wood. Lehigh then loaded the bases for Lucas, who ripped a double to

Lehigh out-hit Detroit 9-7 with Wood, Lucas and Taft all registering multi-hit games. Sophomore Rebecca Bliss picked up her first win of the season, allowing three runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings. Bliss walked three and struck out four, and retired the Titans on just three pitches in the bottom of the third inning.
Detroit loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but freshman Kelsey Lee came out of the bullpen to earn the save, recording the final two outs.
In their second game of the day against Indiana State the Mountain Hawks dug themselves an early seven-run hole that they were unable to climb out of. The Sycamores scored seven runs on just five hits in the first inning.
Junior Julie Fernandez put Lehigh on the board with a first-inning RBI single that scored Wood, but Indiana State responded with two runs in the fourth, plating a pair of unearned runs on a Lehigh error.
Trailing 9-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Lucas helped Lehigh fight off the mercy rule with a three-run blast to left center that brought the Mountain Hawks within five runs.
Lehigh showed its resiliency once again with a late-inning rally. Fernandez (3-for-4) knocked in two more runs with a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh and eventually came around to score on a two-out single by senior Carly Potock. The Mountain Hawks brought the tying run to the plate with two outs but Kristen Felker struck out freshman Lizzy Odren to end the game.
Felker earned the win allowing four earned runs on eight hits in a complete game effort. Freshman Ashley Quigley was saddled with the loss after giving up seven runs in 1.2 innings of work. Lee was once again strong out of the bullpen, allowing two unearned runs in five innings of relief.
“Even though we picked up a win today we're still have some things to work out,” explained Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan. “We're making good progress but we have a lot of work still ahead of us.”
The Mountain Hawks will continue action at the Rebel Spring Games on Tuesday when they face Wagner at 3 p.m. and Florida A&M at 5 p.m.
