NEWARK, N.J. – The Lehigh baseball team (13-8) picked up two big 9-8 and 7-5 wins over the NJIT Highlanders on Sunday afternoon. With the two wins, the Mountain Hawks pick up the four-game sweep over the Highlanders for the weekend.
In game one, Brendan McGaheran had a monster game, going 3-of-5 for two runs and five RBI. In the first inning, McGaheran led off the game with a solo homerun, his second of the season, to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, DJ Roche hit a RBI triple off Colin Gotzon, who made the start for Lehigh, to tie the game at one.
The Mountain Hawks had a tough third inning, giving up four runs on four hits, including a two-run double. The Brown and White trailed 5-1 at that point. As it has done all season though, Lehigh was again strong in immediately responding and would rally.
In the top of the fourth, Kevin Mihalik and Austin Borden led off the inning with back-to-back singles to give runners on first and second with no outs. Chad Warga then hit a clutch two-out single to score Mihalik and make the score 5-2 in favor of the Highlanders. NJIT again responded with two runs in the fifth inning to up its lead to 7-2, but that would not be enough.
Lehigh had a huge five run, five hit sixth inning and tied the game back up at seven. Logan Winchester led off the inning with a single and then Brendan Pifer walked to advance pinch runner Casey Turner to second base. Then with two outs and runners on first and second, McGaheran hit a two-run single to left field to make the score 7-4. McGaheran then stole second and Billy Goldman tripled to score him, cutting the Highlander lead to two. After a pitching change, Andy Russell knocked a double to score Goldman and then Mihalik singled to score Russell to cap off the five run sixth.
NJIT retook the lead in the seventh and had an 8-7 lead. Then, with the bases loaded for Lehigh in the bottom half of the last inning, McGaheran did it again, delivering a two-run game winning single. Cory Kent came in to shut door and pick up the save.
In game two, Lehigh headed into the eighth inning tied at five with NJIT. The Mountain Hawks tallied a run each in the eighth and ninth inning to garner a 7-5 victory. Luke Porter picked up the win for Lehigh in relief and Kent earned his second save of the day. Jordan Warnke made the start for Lehigh, going six innings, giving up five hits and just two earned runs. Goldman had two hits and two runs in the second game.
In the eighth inning, Kevin Mihalik walked to lead off the inning. Turner then advanced Mihalik to third base with a single. Mihalik then scored on an error by the first baseman on a failed pickoff attempt. In the ninth inning, Brendan Pifer scored on a passed ball to give Lehigh an insurance run, and giving them a 7-5 lead.
Lehigh will be back in action on Tuesday as it hosts Saint Joseph's at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
