BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh rowing teams will head to Philadelphia this weekend to compete in the Head of the Schuylkill. The two-day regatta runs on Saturday and Sunday with the Mountain Hawks set to race in eight different events, all on Saturday. This weekend marks the first regatta for the Lehigh women after the men enjoyed success at last weekend's Head of the Charles.
Lehigh's Men's Collegiate Fours crew enjoyed a strong race in finishing 19th of 39 to guarantee entry into next year's event. The crew consisted of seniors Bryce Hurst, Jon Winder and Emily Hrichak, junior Alex Zook and sophomore Alex Smith. The Mountain Hawks hope that success will springboard them into the rest of the season.
“The success of last weekend's race is just a testament to the quickly changing culture of the team,” said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. “The men wanted to go out and show that they're able to compete with the best crews and having done so just reinforced to the rest of the boathouse that the work we're doing is the right stuff. All the long miles we've been putting in and technical work are starting to pay off.”
The women's team is eager and anxious to kick off its slate this weekend with the ultimate goal of competing for a Patriot League Championship in April.
“Success breeds success, so the women are really looking forward for their chance to show their speed this coming weekend,” said Conley. “I also think that [last weekend's] result has made our freshmen a little more excited about the prospect of racing. It will be good to see the work they've been doing as well.”
Lehigh's events kick off at 9:20 a.m. with the Men's Open Fours running through the Women's Open Championship Eight at 2:40 p.m. For the complete schedule of Lehigh's events, please see below.
“What we want to accomplish for this race is both teams continuing to build upon the foundations that we set last year,” said Conley. “The fall is all about getting race experience and learning how to adjust in the midst of a race to find more speed. With the race being nearly three miles, there is a lot that can happen and how we react to different things in races is important to learn and understand for later races.”
