Lehigh drops heartbreaker to Dayton in overtime

PHILADELPHIA – Senior captain Lena Cannon scored a pair of goals as Lehigh erased an early deficit to take a 2-1 lead, but Dayton rallied to tie the game late. Colleen Williams then scored six minutes into overtime to lead the Flyers past the Mountain Hawks 3-2 in the opening game of the Penn Invitational at Rhodes Field. Despite another solid effort against a tough opponent, Lehigh suffers its first loss of the season and falls to 1-1-1.
“As the game went on, we got better,” said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. “We gave up the goal early and it took until the second half to put it all together. The second half may have been the best 45 minutes we've played this year. We took the lead, but we have to grow and figure out a way to finish these games.”
The Flyers needed just over a minute to go in front as Tori Oelschlager scored on a feed from Williams and Jerica DeWolfe. The rest of the first half was tightly contested with Dayton registering six shots and Lehigh five, but with no further scoring the Flyers took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The game remained 1-0 in Dayton's favor until the 67th minute when Cannon took a pass from classmate Glynn Fitzer in the box and beat Lisa Rodgers for her first goal of the season. Cannon struck again 13 minutes later to put the Mountain Hawks ahead as she put in a cross from freshman Murphee Greeley to give Lehigh the lead.
For the third straight game Lehigh succumbed to late game defensive woes. This time it came with just under five minutes remaining when senior goalkeeper Lauren Mains couldn't handle Kelly Blumenschein's cross from the right side. Kelsey Owen scored off the scramble in front to knot the match at two.
The game went into overtime, with Dayton netting the game winner in the 96th minute as Williams headed in Kelsey Miller's free kick past Mains for her fifth goal of the season. The Flyers, who reached the second round of the NCAA tournament last year, improve to 5-2 with the win.
Dayton held a slim 17-14 advantage in shots and the only corner kick of the match. Mains finished with six saves for Lehigh while Rodgers stopped five shots for the Flyers. Fitzer and senior Liz Carlos led Lehigh with four shots apiece.
“Dayton is a good team and we were right there with them for most of the game,” Lambinus said. “We're going to have to learn to win these types of games when we get into Patriot League play.”
The Mountain Hawks will wrap-up action at the Penn Invitational on Sunday when they face Saint Joseph's at 2:30 p.m.
