BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer has announced the addition of five student-athletes who will join the Lehigh field hockey program in the fall. The class of 2014 is smaller than those in years past, but Mazer is confident that this incoming group will make an immediate impact on the field and in the classroom. The Mountain Hawks’ last several recruiting classes have focused on the attacking half of the field, this year’s group leans slightly to the defensive half with a goalkeeper and two backs in the mix.
“I’m happy to welcome this class into our program,” said Mazer, who enters her eighth season. “We addressed our highest priority of bringing in a top goalkeeper with two rising seniors on our roster. We also looked to bring in some talented defenders and I think we did that. It’s a balanced class that will help us in a lot of areas, and they’re an impressive group of students as well as athletes.”
With two rising senior goalkeepers on the roster, Mazer brought in Sierra Segear from Wyoming Seminary in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Seager is a three-year starter and a two-team first team All-State selection for head coach Karen Klassner. She was a member of state championship teams in 2006 and 2008. Seager received her team’s Coaches Award in 2009 and help lead Wyoming Seminary to a 43-2 record over her last two seasons. A member of the Pocono Field Hockey Club, Segear participated in the Futures program and has captained both her high school field hockey and soccer teams.
The first of two backs in the class of 2014 is Marie Mignogna from Eastern Regional High School in Voorhees, N.J. Eastern Regional is annually one of the top programs in New Jersey and Mignogna has started in the back for head coach Danyle Hellig and been a member of a program that won four straight state championships from 2006-2009 and won the Tournament of Champions three times in those four years. Mignogna earned the Unsung Hero Award for Eastern Regional in 2009 after helping lead her team to a 25-2 record and No. 3 national ranking. She plays her club hockey for Jersey Intensity and has won two gold medals at the National Hockey Festival.
Coming to Lehigh from Rumson, N.J. is forward/midfielder Emily Torcivia. A captain at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School as a senior, Torcivia totaled ten goals and nine assists for 29 points while leading her team to a 17-3 record. A first team All-Shore selection, Torcivia netted 22 career goals and totaled 62 career points. Aside from field hockey, Torcivia plays lacrosse and has competed in equestrian for the last eight years. Her mother Bonnie is a 1981 Lehigh graduate who played field hockey and lacrosse, while her cousin Leigh Ann is a sophomore on Lehigh’s women’s lacrosse team.
Caitlyn Mitchell comes to Lehigh from Spring City, Pennsylvania and Owen J. Roberts High School, where she played for head coach Clarence Janelle. A forward, Mitchell was a first team All-PAC 10 selection and a second team member of the All-Southeast Pennsylvania Field Hockey team after registering 18 goals and 22 points in her senior season. Mitchell helped lead Owen J. Roberts to its best season in school history, which resulted in a conference title and a berth in the state playoffs. She finished her high school career with 32 goals and 22 assists.
Rounding out the class of 2014 is Allison Huckfeldt, a back from Summit High School in New Jersey. A good athlete with exceptional speed, Huckfeldt has been a steady performer in the back for her high school team, which won a conference championship in 2008. Huckfeldt plays her club hockey for Quik Stix, which also produced rising Lehigh junior Abby Tilton.
“Overall, I’m pleased to get a talented goalkeeper from one of the best programs in the state,” said Mazer. “This class also includes some very good players who slid under the radar, and we feel this group will be more than able to make a positive contribution to our team as freshmen.”
This incoming class joins a core of 20 returning players for the Mountain Hawks in 2010. Lehigh returned to the Patriot League tournament in 2009 after a one-year hiatus, and has advanced to the postseason in four of the last six seasons.
