Mountain Hawks roll past Pioneers in season opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh field hockey team opened the 2010 season on the right foot with a 4-1 victory over Sacred Heart at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Friday night. Sophomore Kim Eng recorded a goal and two assists, while junior Abby Tilton and senior Katey Fardelmann notched their first career goals as Lehigh won its season opener for the first time since 2002.
“Kim's very talented but she's also a good distributor,” said Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “She's going to have a lot of pressure on her but we have other weapons and it was nice to see them show up tonight. I'm pleased with the effort all around and it feels great to win our season opener.”
The Mountain Hawks' offense churned out 25 shots on the night, forcing Sacred Heart keeper Kim Stow into 15 saves. Lehigh keeper Jessica Miller turned aside two of the three shots she faced as the Brown and White defeated the Pioneers for the first time in school history.
Tilton opened the scoring at the 25:23 mark of the first half off a feed from Eng in front of the net. The lead was short lived; however, as the Pioneers answered just over four minutes later on a goal by Karly Duven.
With the score knotted at one apiece in the second half, the Lehigh offense came to life. Eng picked up a loose ball in front of the Sacred Heart cage and buried her first goal of the season at 37:42 to put Lehigh ahead for good. Junior Madison Ingal added an insurance tally just over 10 minutes later, tucking her shot inside the right post from seven yards out.
“We moved as a unit both offensively and defensively,” Mazer explained. “Many of our strong offensive opportunities came off good defense. We worked on being more discipline and having poised and that helped our ability to create chances because we were good on the counterattack.”
Fardelmann put the game out of doubt at the 51:23 mark. After a penalty corner, Eng found Fardelmann unmarked to the left of the cage. The senior promptly one-timed the pass past the outstretched leg of Stow to give Lehigh a three-goal advantage.
