Lehigh suffers first loss at hands of Quinnipiac

8/29/2010 9:43:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Despite holding a 12-2 advantage in penalty corners, the Lehigh field hockey team fell to Quinnipiac by a 4-1 score on Sunday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Sophomore Kim Eng accounted for the Mountain Hawks' lone goal, her second tally in as many games, as the Brown and White fell to 1-1 on the season.

Eng's goal put Lehigh ahead at the 9:24 mark of the first half off a penalty corner. Senior Claire Horn inserted the corner and sophomore Kelsey Zeswitz provided a perfect stick-stop for Eng to unleash a shot, which bounced inside the left post to give Lehigh the lead.

“I thought we were poised at the beginning of the game,” Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer said. “We were very patient with the ball and we were able to generate scoring chances.”

Quinnipiac answered with a goal at 27:14 as Kaitlyn Notarianni scored the first of her three goals on the day off a feed from Kristin Engelke. The goal was also produced off a penalty corner as Engelke found Notarianni open in close to knot the scoreline at 1-1.

The Mountain Hawks came out firing in the second half, blasting 11 shots to the Bobcats' five, but could not convert as Quinnipiac keeper Nicole Lewis held the fort. Lehigh also held a 9-0 edge in penalty corners in the second half, but Lewis and the resolute Bobcats' defense denied the Mountain Hawks another goal.

“We needed to execute better, especially on corners,” Mazer said. “We needed to do a better job of finishing with all of the opportunities that we had.”

Quinnipiac put the game away in the 47th minute as Notarianni completed the hat trick with a pair of goals just 24 seconds apart. Engelke then added a fourth goal in the 58th minute off a pass from Jess Rusin to give the Bobcats a three-goal advantage.

The Mountain Hawks will try to bounce back on Friday, September 3 against West Chester at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Game time is set for 4 p.m. and live stats will be available at Lehighsports.com.
