BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a break of nearly ten days, the Lehigh softball team is set to return to the diamond this weekend at the three-day UMBC Spring Classic in Baltimore, Md. The Mountain Hawks went 4-2 at a rain-shortened Rebel Spring Games in Florida last week which moved their overall record to 6-4. Rain forced the cancellation of Lehigh’s final four games in Florida last Thursday and Friday.
Lehigh’s last action was March 9 when the Mountain Hawks dropped a 4-0 decision to Indiana State before defeating Fairfield 4-2. Junior third baseman Alex Cueva led the Mountain Hawks in six games in Florida with a .455 batting average and six runs batted in. Sophomore Julie Fernandez and freshman Liz Lucas each added five hits and four RBI in six games, with Lucas being named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday.
In the pitcher’s circle, senior Tiffany Curtis is 4-1 with a team-leading 23 strikeouts, while junior Bri Gaumer had two of her best outings of her career in winning her final two starts in Florida.
Lehigh will open tournament action with a single game against Delaware on Friday. The Fightin’ Blue Hens have struggled this year, with a 3-13 record. Delaware split a doubleheader with Temple Wednesday in Newark. The Mountain Hawks and Fightin’ Blue Hens will meet at 4:25 p.m. Friday and then again at 8:45 a.m. Sunday.
On Saturday, Lehigh will meet Niagara at 8:45 a.m. and Mount St. Mary’s at 2:30 p.m. The Purple Eagles are just 3-5 and haven’t played since March 7 due to weather. Mount St. Mary’s enters the weekend at 11-7 after dropping games to George Mason and Albany last weekend.
The Mountain Hawks will wrap-up tournament play on Sunday with games against Delaware and Georgetown at 8:45 and 10:40 a.m. respectively. The Hoyas fell to 6-12 after going 0-5 at the Bayer Cropscience Classic in Fresno, Calif.
All games at the UMBC Spring Classic will be played at the UMBC Softball Stadium in Baltimore, Md.
