Mountain Hawks earn split Tuesday in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Sophomore Audra Wood slapped a three-run bases-clearing triple to lead Lehigh to a come-from-behind 4-2 to win over Fairfield Tuesday in the Mountain Hawks’ second game of the day at the Rebel Spring Games. The win earned Lehigh a split of its two games on the day as earlier, Missouri Valley Conference member Indiana State scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to break open a pitcher’s duel as the Mountain Hawks fell 4-0. With the split Lehigh heads into an off day at 6-4 overall.
The day’s first game began as a pitcher’s duel between Lehigh senior Tiffany Curtis and the Sycamores’ Lindsey Beisser, who matched zeroes through the first five innings. The Mountain Hawks loaded the bases in the top of the sixth inning, but Beisser struck out Julie Fernandez and got sophomore Jen Colquhoun to fly to right to end the threat.
In the bottom of the frame, Indiana State loaded the bases on a hit, a Lehigh error and a fielder’s choice. Amber Paz gave the Sycamores the lead with a one-out double down the left field line that scored all three runners. Two batters later, Bailey Wittenauer singled home Paz to give Indiana State a 4-0 lead.
Beisser limited Lehigh to four singles to earn the win, striking out nine in the process. Curtis (4-1) suffered her first loss of the season, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits. Curtis struck out two and walked one. Junior Alex Cueva registered two of Lehigh’s four hits.
In game two, junior Bri Gaumer matched up with Fairfield’s Sarah Minice. The Stags took the lead in the top of the second on an Allison Wigand two-run home run, but the Mountain Hawks responded with four runs on the bottom of the frame, three of which came on Wood’s big hit, to take the lead. Cueva added an RBI single to bring home Wood with Lehigh’s fourth run. Gaumer (2-1) earned her second win in as many days, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four and walking none. Curtis came out of the bullpen to earn her first save. Lehigh also received a defensive boost from freshman Kristen Mitchell who made a running catch in the gap in right center to thwart a Stags rally.
The Mountain Hawks are off Wednesday and will return to action on Thursday at the Rebel Spring Games with contests against Butler at 1 p.m. and Detroit at 5 p.m.
