Mountain Hawks drop opener in Baltimore

BALTIMORE, Md. – In its first action in ten days, Lehigh opened up action at the UMBC Spring Classic with an 11-2 loss to Delaware in five innings Friday evening at the UMBC Softball Complex. The Fightin’ Blue Hens scored 11 unanswered runs in the first five innings before the Mountain Hawks scored their only two runs in the bottom of the fifth. The loss drops Lehigh to 6-5 on the season.
Delaware (5-13) took it to Lehigh right off the bat with five runs off senior Tiffany Curtis in the top of the first inning. After Amanda Stacevicz put the Fightin’ Blue Hens in front with an RBI single, Mary Ann Magee drilled a grand slam to left field to make it 5-0.
The Fightin’ Blue Hens added to their lead with a single run in the second and two in the fourth off Curtis.
In the fifth, Curtis gave way to freshman Becca Bliss, who gave up a three-run home run to Michelle Grap.
Lehigh was finally able to plate two runs in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI groundout by sophomore Julie Fernandez and an RBI single by classmate Jen Colquhoun. The Mountain Hawks were out-hit by an 11-7 margin, with freshman Liz Lucas leading the Brown and White, going 2-for-3 with a double.
Grap, Stacevicz and Magee, the three-four-five hitters in Delaware’s lineup combined for five hits and nine RBI.
Curtis allowed eight runs on eight hits in four innings as she falls to 4-2 on the season. Curtis walked four and struck out two.
Anne Marie Pagano earned the win for Delaware, allowing two runs on seven hits in five innings.
The Mountain Hawks will continue action at the UMBC Spring Classic on Saturday, when they face Niagara at 8:45 a.m. and Mount St. Mary’s at 2:30 p.m.
