Rey, Hamlin remain perfect as Lehigh goes 2-1 at Northeast Duals

TROY, N.Y. – Junior Zach Rey and sophomore Robert Hamlin each went 3-0 on the day to carry the 11th-ranked Lehigh wrestling team to two wins in three matches at the Northeast Duals Saturday at Hudson Valley Community College. The Mountain Hawks opened the day with a 36-7 romp over No. 23 Virginia and closed the day with a 40-3 rout of George Mason, but in between stumbled in a 21-10 setback against No. 16 Missouri. Lehigh now stands at 5-2 on the dual season.
Lehigh continued a stretch of five straight duals against ranked foes with its first two matches on Saturday. In the opener against Virginia, the Mountain Hawks picked up three falls and also picked up six points with a win by forfeit at 197. Lehigh dropped the opening bout as senior Mitch Berger lost 10-2 to Matthew Snyder at 125, but the Mountain Hawks then took control of the dual winning the next five bouts.
Freshman Frank Cagnina bounced back from his first loss of the season last week with his first pin of the year as he decked Joseph Spisak in 2:28. Freshman Stephen Dutton (141) and sophomore Joey Napoli (149) followed with wins by decision, before back-to-back pins by juniors Sean Bilodeau and Brandon Hatchett, at 157 and 165 respectively, put Lehigh comfortably ahead. Bilodeau picked up his third fall of the season, shaking off an injury to pin Shawn Harris in 5:38 while Hatchett needed just 34 seconds to deck Charles Miller.
Virginia won its second and final bout at 174 where second-ranked Chris Henrich won 9-4 over freshman Austin Meys. Hamlin and Rey won decisions at 184 and heavyweight respectively to go with a forfeit win to junior Joe Kennedy at 197.Things did not go as well for the Mountain Hawks against No. 16 Missouri. The Tigers won the first seven bouts, including a number of close decisions to open up a 21-0 lead before Lehigh won the final three bouts.
For Missouri, Alan Waters won 7-3 over Berger at 125 and Nathan McCormick downed Cagnina 11-6 at 133. The next five bouts were all decided by one or two points and the Tigers found a way to win all five. Junior Brian Tanen made his dual debut, subbing for the injured Bilodeau at 157 and lost 5-3 to Dan Gonsor. Hatchett was upended 3-2 by Zach Toal at 165, while Meys lost a 3-1 decision to Dorian Henderson in a battle of ranked men at 174.
Hamlin got Lehigh on the scoreboard with a 10-3 win over Mike Larson at 184. Kennedy provided the only bonus points of the dual as he majored Jake Glore 12-3.
The highlight of the dual and possibly the day was a matchup of the top two heavyweights in the nation as top-ranked Zach Rey met No. 2 Dom Bradley. Rey won two bouts against the junior World Champion last season and made it 3-for-3 against the Tiger with a 3-2, win in the tiebreakers. Tied at one after eight minutes of wrestling, Rey rode Bradley out in the first 30 second period and then reversed Bradley in the second before cutting Bradley loose for a late escape.
Lehigh did bounce back to finish the day on a high note, losing just one bout against George Mason. The Mountain Hawks benefitted from forfeit wins at 125 and 133 and added two more falls to the ledger. Meys picked up a pin in his return to the capital region of New York by pinning Greg Scott in 2:12, while Rey needed just 17 seconds to pin Hunter Manspile. Hatchett added a bonus point with a major decision win at 165.
George Mason's lone win came at 197 where fourth-ranked Cayle Byers edged Kennedy 2-1.
At the end of the day the seventh-ranked Hamlin and the top-ranked Rey emerged as the only Lehigh regulars who have not lost this season. Both men are 7-0.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Friday when they head to Bucknell to face their first EIWA opponent of the season. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start from Davis Gym. The match will be broadcast on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 as well as Lehighsports.com with coverage beginning at 6:45.
