Lehigh retains River Cup; wins Neuweiler Plate

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – On a picture perfect day for rowing, Lehigh once again won the River Cup as the Mountain Hawks defeated archrival Lafayette. Lehigh also downed in-state foes Penn State, Franklin & Marshall and Lafayette to earn the first-ever Neuweiler Plate. Among the crews that earned first place finishes on the Lehigh River were the men’s varsity 8, freshmen 8, varsity 4 A, varsity 4 B, freshmen 4 A, freshmen 4 B, and on the women’s side, the second varsity 8, freshmen 8, and varsity 4.
On the men’s side, the varsity 8 crew crossed first in its race with a time of 5:34.1, outdistancing second place Penn State, which finished in 5:44.2, while the second varsity 8 finished second in its race with a time of 5:19.9. The freshmen 8 finished in a time of 5:39.1, which was ten seconds faster than second place Lafayette, while the freshmen 4 A crew crossed in 6:33.9, 13 seconds faster than the Leopards. The freshmen 4 B crew won its race by over 20 seconds versus the Nittany Lions.
In the men’s varsity 4 A race, Lehigh crossed in first place with a time of 5:41.6, while in the varsity 4 B race, the Mountain Hawks finished in 6:05.1 to easily defeat Franklin & Marshall.
The women’s second varsity 8 finished its race in a time of 6:21.9, which was over ten seconds faster than the second place boat from Penn State, while the varsity 8 placed second in its race with a time of 6:44.8.
The freshmen 8 cruised past Penn State to win its race in a time of 6:19.2, and Lehigh B won the varsity 4 race with a time of 7:03.1. Lehigh A finished third in the same race. Lehigh B crossed in second place in the women’s freshmen 4 race, while Lehigh A finished in fourth place. The varsity lightweight 8 completed its race in 7:16.0 to place third, while Lehigh A finished second in the lightweight 4 race with a time of 7:40.1.
Lehigh is back on the water on Sunday, April 26 when the Mountain Hawks head to New Jersey to compete at the 2009 Patriot League Championship on the Cooper River.
