Hempstead, NY – For the second time this season, Lehigh’s Jon Trenge fell victim to the Sanderson storm. Iowa State’s Cael Sanderson improved his NCAA record-breaking record to 145-0 with a 6-1 victory over Trenge at the NWCA All-Star Classic on Monday evening at Hofstra University.
After losing to Sanderson 16-4 in the first meeting, Trenge battled Sanderson much harder this time around and actually made history in the loss. Trenge became the first person to not surrender a point to Sanderson in the first period. Previously, Sanderson had scored at least one point in the first period of all 144 victories.
Trenge scored the first points of the bout with an escape in the second period but Sanderson countered later in the second with a takedown to take a 2-1 lead heading into the final period. In the third, Sanderson recorded an escape to take a 3-1 lead before recording one final takedown with six seconds left to lead 5-1 at the end of regulation. A bonus point for riding time gave him the eventual 6-1 win.
"I think Jon stopped most of Sanderson’s offense and kept it close before needing to take a risk at the end," said head coach Greg Strobel. "Jon hustled and moved really well."
The 11th ranked Mountain Hawks return to action on February 7th when they travel to Rider. Lehigh is 9-5 overall on the season and 5-0 in the EIWA.
