Bethlehem, PA – Seven different Mountain Hawks scored goals as Lehigh improved to 4-0 on the season with a 7-5 overtime win over St. Joseph’s at the Ulrich Sports Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
Lehigh jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half, behind goals from junior Emily Studdiford, sophomore Jen Fleming, junior Suzanne Aronowitz and sophomore Barrie Cominsky. The second half saw St. Joseph’s come roaring back, outscoring Lehigh 5-1 and tying the score with just 0:57 to play in regulation.
The game moved to overtime where junior Meredith Carso converted a free position attempt at the 61:04 mark to give Lehigh the lead for good. Sophomore Kellan Van Hoesen tacked on her team leading tenth goal of the season for insurance. Van Hoesen was Lehigh’s only multiple point scorer in the contest, with a goal and a pair of assists.
Freshman Kyle Begina had another strong game in goal for Lehigh, making 15 saves, while allowing just the five Hawk scores. The Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, senior Rosie Sherry, picked up seven ground balls in the contest and created three turnovers.
St. Joseph’s Kelly Butler was the only player in the contest to score multiple times, beating Begina twice, both in the second half. Goalkeeper Courtney Huff made six saves in the losing effort.
"We didn’t play our best lacrosse today," head coach Judy Baxter said. "We jumped on them early, but couldn’t protect the lead in the second half. We never fell behind though, and managed to come away with the win. It was good for our team to see that they can still win even if they don’t play their best."
Turnovers plagued both teams. Lehigh turned the ball over 21 times, with St. Joe’s returning the favor 17 times. The Mountain Hawks had a huge advantage in ground balls, picking up 25, compared to just 10 for St. Joseph’s.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday, when they host American in the Patriot League opener. Game time at the Ulrich Sports Complex is set for 1:00.
