Strong second half not enough at Columbia

New York, NY – Despite dominating the entire second half, Lehigh could not recover from the seven goal deficit Columbia produced in the first, as the Mountain Hawks suffered an 8-5 loss to the Lions Tuesday night. Lehigh drops to 3-8 and remains 1-2 in the Patriot League as Columbia improves to 5-5.
The Lions came out on fire scoring seven of their eight goals in the first half. The Mountain Hawks, kept scoreless in the first, thought they had earned two goals. However, officials called them back because the shots were taken with a Lehigh player inside the crease.
In the second half the Mountain Hawks picked up the intensity that they lacked in the first. Ella Studdiford switched the momentum to favor the Mountain Hawks, finding the back of the net in less than one minute of play. Columbia's Maggie Via scored the Lion's final goal of the night before the Mountain Hawks went on to record four unanswered goals. Senior captain Kristin Strohm scored back-to-back goals and added an assist before the clock cut Lehigh's rally short.
Sophomore Vanessa Abbott had a solid game for Lehigh between the posts as she tallied nine saves on 19 Columbia attempts.
Head coach Jackie Keeley felt the team played well in the second half. "We got off to a slow start and lacked the emotion we needed early on. The team picked it up and completely dominated them in the second half. However we need to play with that intensity throughout the whole game," said Keeley.
Lehigh returns home on Saturday, April 6th when it hosts league opponent Colgate at 1:00. Fans can listen to the action live by logging on to the Lehigh website.
